Noob question on Vista and DX10

First off, sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but I'm a little confused about DX10 and Vista. I had thought that to run a game with DX10, you simply needed a DX10 compatible GPU, and Vista wasn't necessary.

In looking at performance comparisons, I'm reluctant to switch to Vista (will probably wait for a service pack, if that) and driver updates for GPUs. But if it's not necessary to play DX10 games, that will put off my purchase even further.

Am I on the right track here? Or way off? :(

Thanks!

You need Vista to run DX10 itself. And to run a DX10 game, with DX10 capabilities, you need Vista, with a DX10 card like a 8800.

You can run a DX10 GPU on XP and DX9, as it will run in DX9 mode.

First "DX10" games will most likely run both in DX10 and DX9.

However, I would not recommend the 8800 GTS/GTX
First, it is unknown if these cards will run superior on dx10 games, and second, it is still too early to even know if it is worth it or not. :D

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Oh well, looks like I need to save some more money.

Probably all of us will have to save some more money. At least we'll probably have 6 months or more before the first DX10 games come out that can really use it.
