It may have been covered already, but what is AMD going to name the Barcelona chip in the retail market? Will it still be called Athlon 64 ect.. or will they make a new name considering the chip arch is so different (just like Intel changing from Pentium to Core).

Since Barcelona is the server chip, I think AMD may name it W3xx or W4xx...

For W=number of processors supported and xx=frequency-related number.

Well I'm pretty certain they will stick with Opteron for Barcelona.

As for the stars family on the desktop, I guess we will still have Athlon 64, in X2 and X4 forms, but maybe with a replacement for the PR rating. I imagine we'll officially see Sempron X2's as well.

I guess they could ditch Athlon 64 completely, but I can't think what they'd replace it with. Unless they pick a number higher than 64 then in your average consumers mind its not as good as Athlon 64 :?

My guess is that we will get a total rebranding when Fusion comes along.

I don't see why they can't stick with Athlon64. Unlike Intel, Athlon doesn't illicit thoughts of...underpowered/hot running, electricity sucking. Intel was wise to dissociate the Core architecture from Netburst, and in all honesty...i can't understand why they're creating another Pentium series..bad boys!! :x Pentium is a skeleton that should go back in the closet(PII's and PIII's don't deserve the negativity associated with Pentium). /rant. :D Barcelona64 just doesn't roll off the tongue that well.

A new naming scheme is definitely in order. I don't want to see an X2 7400+ coming out...that would just be obnoxious.

They'll stick with Athlon64. No reason to give up a good thing.

I think they should move Budapest to 142xx and Kuma to 12xx. Agena could be 141xx.

It has been said that the PR rating is gone.

It has been said that the PR rating is gone. That's a "model" number, but they still need a "series"/family name. i.e. Athlon64 142xx, etc. I don't see them calling it AMD Kuma12xx/Agena141xx. Too hard for Average Joe to remember.

Athlon 64 is a perfectly fine name. I guess I was just hoping for a refresh in the naming. Oh well.

Thanks

I dunno, the Athlon moniker is becoming somewhat dated, just as the Pentium name did. I mean, I guess they can keep going with Athlon64 without harm, but I also, personally, wouldn't mind a change.

Speaking of "Average Joe" just market the FX-7X's as "Pamela Anderson X 2 Left and Right":P "Average Joe's would flock to buy a Pair for their QFX's( 2 of them are better than one). Who in their right minds buys only one>??

8) AMD should hire me, I'm a Genius.

So why would you think I didn't mean that? I even said the PR rating going away.

It may even go similarly but use X2/X4
So, AMD Athlon64 X2 12xx, X4 14xx

or, Opteron 14xx, Opteron 24xx/84xx

I have 3 separate ideas.

For Intel Fanbois:
The KL8 (K-Late) Series.

For AMD Fanbois:
TCPS Seires- i.e. This Chip Pwns Stupid

For Music Fans of the Barcelona Series:
AMD Macarena
AMD Las Ketchup
