I am having my basement re-wired and dropping several additional ports in. I will end up with 12 ports scattered throughout the house. So, I think that I need new hardware. Currently, I have a cable modem and wireless router. My main machine plugs directly (hard wire) into the router (and is currently the only one that is hard wired). I am installing a new machine in the basement that will be used to capture/record TV shows. I am also installing a new machine on the first floor that will be capable of capturing/recording/playing back TV shows. Need a way to transfer files between these 2 new machines (and the 4 other computers in the house). Would like to convert at least 2 of these other computers to hard wiare from wireless. At least 3 of the computers that will be attached (but not all) will have Giga NICs. So, I think I need a switch? Yes? If so, what brand and what model? Would like to stay under $100 if possible. Do not have to have the absolute lowest cost model (some bells and whistles might be nice) but also do not need a super-high-end-expensive model either (I am NOT trying to get into the ISP business).
