To upgrade or not to upgrade?

Hey,

I have an older AMD 64 3500 newcastle with a 7900gt 256 and a 1 gb (512x2). My mobo is a s939 Epox 9pna.

I was thinking about building up a new PC with a c2d R600 ect. A monster PC in the upcoming summer for myself.

But money could be tight and I was thinking about just going with a x2 4800/4600 and then upgrading to a 2 gb (1gbx2) kit. That upgrade would only cost about 400 and it could really extend the life of this PC by about another year or two until DX 10 and vista level out.

What do yall think?

I did the exact same thing. (the 4800+ route and ram)

I am happy with my decision...it gives the current PC some extra legs until penryn for sure, maybe nehalem, depending on what you use the computer for.

Although some people would recommend the opteron series because they are for servers and are rumoured to run better and overclock more. However, I got a crappy cheap mobo and can't OC too well anyways so I saved a couple bucsk and got the 4800+

Wait dude you will definitely save more when the intel's new CPUs come. Also let a better DX 10 GFX card popup, a 8800GTX in a year might just become a entry level DX 10 card.

Also, with 939 CPUs not being made anymore a choice would have to be made relatively quickly...prices dropped for a bit but once the supply dries up they would probably get more expensive.

For instance, I just checked tigerdirect canada and my 4800+ is no longer available there...

Absolutely. That's why NewEgg has just raised its pricing on all Super Socket 7 CPUs by 57.3%!

So i guess I would have to say this page thinks an upgrade for the current system is better.

I guess I will have to ask if it should be a 4600/4800/or fx60

I am leaning towards the 4800 as it seems to be in the middle of the two

Apparently the 4800s are in short supply just about everywhere.

Do not under any circumstances plan for a 939 build this summer unless you've already ordered your cpu, the good crap is all selling out.

if geoffry is right about 939 not being made anymore than AMD has no more impact on these processors, it's up to the E-tailers

So with the supply running out I should prob make a decision soon on what to do.

I think I will probably just extend the life of this PC with a new proc and ram as it will allow me to speed up this PC and last another year or two without a major overhaul ( and allow DX10 and vista to mature)

Thanks to everyone who posted

A bandaid boost? Opty 165 or a 3800 x2. Cheapest dual core, with headroom to overclock some. I've got a 4400 x2 and the new E6600 C2D. The Core2 spanks the AMD, even after Ocing the x2 to 2400 mhz to match the C2D. Definitely smart in waiting to build a Core2 system. The prices will be dropping soon on the CPU, with more versions being released. The P965 chipsets are getting refined and OC like no tommorow as it is. nVidia 680 chipsets are still too damn high in price. It sucked having to buy DDR2 memory when my 2 gigs of DDR500 still run fine. Hopefully the price of memory will come back down soon. I'd look into getting a hard drive about now, 320 gbs are under $100, and 400 gbs are just over $100. Used to be a buck a gig was a good price, now it's like 3 gigs for a buck. Not sure how long this will stay like this. You can also pick up a couple of 160 gig drives for around $50 a piece and set them in RAID 0 for an added performance boost.

What I would do is sell the current CPU, Ram & MB in the weekend paper (it's free here in Aus/Perth under $300) and use the proceeds for new gear.

As long as you can do without a PC for 2/3 weeks

Those parts you have now sell easily, mine did :D

I was seriously thinking about using one of those 386 socket adaptors to upgrade my 8088 board...

Nah, not me. I'm going to two quadcores this summer. AMD or Intel, whichever one delivers the goods by the time I'm ready to shell out the ca$h!

Do exactly what you suggested.Nuy a faster cpu and another gig of ram and you should be good for at least another year, probably more.Goodluck.
