I'm trying to network together my desktop PC, which is wired in to my wireless router, to my wirelessly connected laptop, and I'm having some issues. Every single resource I've looked at for help with this has either told me how to create a network where everything is wireless, or where everything is hardwired in. This is an issue for me. Both computers are running windows XP, if that helps any, and while I don't expect someone to explain to me the ins and outs right now, even a decent site or resource to look at would be appreciated.
If you rt clink on My Computer > Properties. make sure both pc are in the same group. You will need to know user names and PW.
You need to turn on "File & printer sharing" on at least one of your pc. If you are going to be transfering files from both pc's, turn it on both computers. Once started up. You can use the default shared folder or rt click and share what ever file or folder you want.
Then use network connection wizzard to connect to the shared folder. Once you run this allow a couple of min for windows to start the service.
Both PCs don't need to be in the same workgroup for it to work. All you really need is to enable file sharing and share whatever folders you want to have accessible to the other computer. Make sure you use simple file sharing, it should be on by default. Once you enable sharing, you can access the other PC by typing \\otherpcname from the run dialog box.
Well, that might be the official word from MS, but I've never had anything reliably work with workgroup browsing. All my stuff is domain-based because for the most part domain-based networks "just work".
