I have one of my woofers that does not produce any sound at all and it is
confirmed that the woofer is bad. Is there any possibility that a bad woofer
can be fixed? I cannot locate a replacement as the company is out of
business and the new owners don't even know the model I am needing.
Where can I find info on speaker repair in regards to my situation. I don't
need reconing at all the speaker looks physically excellent. It just does
not produce sound.

Thank you for any help

I would look for the company that purchased your speaker company's
assets. But it sounds like you've already done this and they are no
longer supporting the speaker.

I would then probably get new speakers, but you may be able to find an
equivalently sized woofer to install in your speaker or check eBay for
the same speaker. If I were replacing with a third-party woofer, I would
do both speakers. I think there is a magazine for speaker design and
construction. I seem to remember either seeing it at Borders or in the
back of magazines like Home Theater or Stereophile.

I doubt a repair is an option.

Several years ago I had one of the woofers go bad on one of my 30+ year old
AR-3 speakers. Acoustic Research has long since been bought out by other
companies, but a group of former employees (also enthusiasts) bought the old
parts inventory and other supplies and equipment and continued selling
components for legacy models. I was able to locate them on line.
If your speakers were manufactured by one of the many New England
manufacturers, you may find some valuable information here:

Cross posting corrected

There are a number of companies that repair speakers. One that does
excellent work is The Speaker Exchange in Tampa, FL. I'd give them a call
and ask if they have the parts for your speaker. If you posted the brand
and model someone might have some more specific info.

Maybe it could be rebuilt. What model speaker are you talking about and
are you absolutely positive the crossover is okay?

What is the brand and model number of the speaker?
How have you confirmed that the woofer is bad?
Does it make any noise at all?

I am having a similar problem. I have some Celestion SL6 si speakers
and one of the woofers is toast. Well, I have tried and tried to find
someone in Toronto who can either order another woofer or get a recone
kit, and it doesn't exist. Are you having the same problems with Celestion
down in the States? Why does Celestion not exist in Canada? And yes
I have tried the music stores where they carry Celestions for guitar
amps and that was a dead end.

Rob, unless the situation has changed in the last few weeks, Celestion
is currently without a Canadian distributor. The former distributor
Efkay/Kaysound dropped/lost the line a few months ago.
Perhaps they still have some stock of drivers or recone kits? I'd
suggest a quick email to them:

The speaker is from a Dahlquist Model PDQ16.
I confirm the speaker is bad because I switched the problem speaker to the
box that had no problem and it doesn't work. I then took the speaker that
was working and put it in the one that had problem and it worked so I
conclude that the speaker is bad .It does not make any sound at all. Just
silence.

Have you tried eBay? I searched on "Dahlquist" and found lots of speakers,
maybe one of them has a driver that will fit in your particular unit.

I'd first contact Madisound and see if they know what Dhalquist used. If
it was an off the shelf driver, it should be easy to replace.

I'd then talk to the guys at the Speaker Factory in Rockville, MD, who are
apparently now working out of their house, but who do a good job of rebuilding
drivers for which parts aren't normally available. They can rewind a damaged
voice coil.

Here is another link where you might be able to find a suitable replacement.
I had them refoam a pair of woofers a few years back. They took their time
but they did a good job with the repairs and the speakers sounded like new
when
I got them back.

Good Luck.

I have had this situation with a KEF B139 woofer. Turned out a lead
from the voice coil to the speaker terminals had opened. I was able to
repair it with a bit of solder and patience. On the B139 this turns out
to be relatively easy since the magnet screws onto the frame and can be
removed to give access to the leads.
