Hi,
I got a new hard drive for storage and it's performing terribly. I finally ran a benchmark on it using HD Tach and got read speed of 4 MB/s and 44% cpu utilization. Meanwhile my main system drive works much better (it's also sata II with 4% cpu usage...). Any thoughts on where I may have screwed up or is the drive just bad?

I'm using Gigabyte 965P-S3 motherboard. I plugged the drive into the same channel as the main drive and they're not raided. The motherboard manual doesn't say anything about that being wrong, and I assumed you can plug in 6 sata drives from the specs...so I don't think I made a mistake there.

Thanks for any suggestions.

As a last resort yesterday I switched it to a different channel and now it works perfectly.

I also enabled AHCI on the motherboard. But even with it disabled the other SATA drive performed well.

Does anyone know how to enable s.m.a.r.t. on gigabyte 965 s3? I can't find it in the manual or the bios and it shows that it's disabled for both drives.
