Hi there. I am very close to purchasing the Sony 34" widescreen
direct-view CRT 34HS510 ($1800). I would assume it is being replaced
by their new 34HS420 ($1500), which is lower cost... (much like they
are replacing the 34XBR910 with the lower-cost 34XBR960). However,
both of the HS models are still listed on Sony's website.
Are they in fact, discontinuing the HS510? If so, when? Should i
except further price drops? I was going to purchase from Best Buy
this week ($1800). They have a 30 day price protection guarantee, so
i can get the difference in cost back for 30 days after purchase, if
the price drops. I'm just wondering if i should scoop up the TV now
before they're gone, or if they're not yet discontinued, should i wait
a few weeks?
Finally, does anyone know what advantages there are to getting the
HS510 over the new HS420 (or vice-versa)? I like the appearance of
the HS510 more than any other because it's very simple and sleek
looking. I don't like the "built-in" stand look of the new Sony's...i
don't use a Sony stand. I use a Boltz.
Anyone who owns the 34HS510...do the stretch/zoom modes work well? I
will be watching DVD's and analog basic cable...no cable box, just the
RF from the wall into my VCR.

I have been using the Sony 34HS510 for several months now. It is a very nice
set. It has 98% of the picture quality of the 34XBR910 for 75% of the price.
It also has a very good de-interlacer that gives a better picture than my
progressive scan DVD can produce internally.
The stretch/zoom modes work fine.
When a manufacturer discontinues a model for another with a lower price a
couple of things may happen- 1) the new model may have fewer features or 2)
the new model is built with lower cost technology so they can offer a lower
price with the same features, or 3) some of both.
