Hi,

I was hoping someone here had some experience repairing things such as this. The GPU is in good working order it seems. However, without this cap functionality is limited (obviously). So, I have sent in a ticket to ATI hoping they could provide me with info about what the part is exactly so I can purchase it.. however I am not too sure they will assist me in this matter. Also, as it is so small and an SMD, I am not sure how I would get it in there guessing that normal soldering won't work.. not sure though, I am willing to try anything. I have included a link to a pic that shows the exact cap that is missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In case you are wondering, I think I might have knocked it off while i was scraping off the crappy thermal compound off the GPU in order to put in a new hsf as it seemed to be experiencing some heat-related artifacting.

thanks

That's a bumber man. I can tell you that "IF" you can get another one of those that you can solder it back and it should be fine. Thing is, you don't have one. :( At this point and withouth knowing the actual value it would be hard to say. One thing is you could try and measure one of the surrounding values of the other resister chips and see if you can find one on another video card that might have that on it.
As for ATI sending you one, I highly doubt it but if they do, please post and let us know anyway. But that part 'Can' be soldered. It takes some skills but it can happen. You will need like a very small needle nose pair of pliers and or like some kind of tweezers to hold it while you touch solder it on. That's assumeing you have the part. I'll see if I can locate a 'bad' 9700 card and pull one off and send it. I know of one place to look. but do not hold your breath and I am not just talking from the bung, Ill seriously try to find you a part. Again though, you have to be able to solder that dog. :) Hope ATI can help you but I have never heard of them ever sending out a resister chip before.
Good Luck Man!

Thanks, I really appreciate it! Yeah, it will be incredibly difficult to solder it.. maybe I will ask my wife to hold the tweezers.

oh yes, ATI says they have no documentation to tell them what part it is.. kinda lame.
