John,
What ever it is will have to have push to talk that works as Well
as IDEN.
Otherwise, the advantages of purchasing Nextel goes away, and so do
the corporate customers who pay a lot for that service.

iden is going away, as it wouldn't allow upgrades to allow high speed
internet, indeed that is what pushed Nextel into the merger,
i.e. the 3 + billion cost of upgrading/converting, which it can now
avoid. Sprint already has a form of Push to Talk, and by owning Nextel
it can improve that functionalty without fear of infringing on Nextel
patents which it will own after the merger.

Not true- there was already a very successful test of high speed data in NC
using the iDen network.

Wrong again- the iDen PTT product will continue to operate (even after
cellular migration to CDMA) until new CDMA PTT technology is developed- not
a redesign of the Sprint PTT. You probably should have watched the press
conference this morning before babbling on about things you know nothing
about.
Glad to see that your record of not having a clue is intact.

They run a CDMA technology network. For switches they probably use
either Lucent, Nortel, or Ericsson switches.

True, but that's actually bad news for Sprint-Nextel, since subscribers will
have to make a choice between PTT (iDEN) or high-speed data (Sprint Vision),
and the CDMA latency problem may be difficult to overcome.

That's Sprint. Nextel is iDEN.

Motorola announced today that they'll have a dual mode phone available to
the company in 2006. No need to choose between platforms.

If (1) it works and (2) you're willing to buy a new phone.

And your reason for doubting the functionality of this compared to any other
dual mode phone is.......?

It's still vaporware, and Motorola has a spotty record in delivering on
long-range technology pronouncements.

True, but no more than any other unreleased product.

Not with iDen and Nextel- the exclusivity of their agreement has led to
pretty much in-time delivery of any new technology. Nextel has owned the
rights for over two years to iDen-CDMA bridge technology and has admitted
talking to Sprint as early as February of this year. Wanna bet that
development of the phone is at least a year old?

It's more because it's farther out in time.

This isn't just iDEN.

Because there was no competitive pressure, something that has undoubtedly
frustrated Nextel.

I'll bet that it's still pretty much vaporware.

Talked to a sprint rep. They have No idea.
Basically, they will have to keep the Iden around for a long time,
because iden has push to talk. Even the sprint Rep said that Iden had
it all over cdma with push to talk.
