Explorer.exe hangs on a reboot after displaying the background. No icons,
taskbar, mouse etc.

(This is an updated post from yesterday, 'No Desktop, No icons.....)

Killing EXPLORER.EXE with the task manager and restarting it brings back
normal desktop icons, task bar on both machines.

Re-boot shows same old problem but killing and reloading explorer works each
time.

What could cause explorer to hang on boot, but start ok on a restart?

Thanks

You don't mention in this thread how long this has been
going on and what possible event(s) immediately preceded
it.

You might look at this link (below) and activate boot
logging in order to look for a clue. Also it's possible
that a particular BIOS setting is being ignored when
restarting Explorer, i.e. many motherboard BIOSes revert
to PCI-video instead of AGP-video under certain
circumstances. If yours is set this way it is possible it
could cause problems in XP. It is unlikely.

Also, have you checked for BIOS updates for your
motherboard ?

Good luck !
