In short...
I have a cable modem connected to the PC via a LAN cable
Everything was working fine for a month or so...
I can see the connection in networking properties (it says, connected at 100Mbit)

However when I open firefox, it says server not found.

Using the same cable modem via USB, everything works fine.

All I would like is a quick list of "things to check"
Thanks in advance :D

Have you replaced the cat 5 ? eliminate the Ethernet port on the CM by using a loopback ethernet towards the cable modem.

Obviously you'll want to cycle the power to your modem (if there is an issue with the DHCP server running on the modem this could fix it).

Otherwise, make sure your adapter is set to "Obtain an IP Address automatically" (unless you have changed default settings on modem or something this is the standard setup). To check the status of the adapter, type ipconfig /all from a cmd prompt. You should see that your adapter has an IP address assigned from the cable modem (and the default gateway should be the cable modem's address).
