Okay, I purchased a new CAD station for home. The motherboard is the Asus P5W DH. It has two network ports on the back of it, and it also acts as a wifi AP.
So here is what I thought I could do... Use my new CAD station as the main one. I would plug the ADSL modem into one port. The family PC which is about 20 feet away (across the room) would be hardwired to the second netork port on the back of the mother board. My wife's laptop would connect wirelessly through the built-in wireless unit.
I simply want to allow internet and file sharing between the three pc's.
Am I totally wrong in my thought and this won't work... or am I doing something wrong. I can get the laptop to recognize the CAD system, but internet doesn't work nor does file sharing. The other PC in the basement can't communicate at all... doesn't seem to find it when going to network places... I even tried the wireless G network card that I had in it, still no luck there either.
Should I just give up and purchase a high speed wireless router (I have an old Microsoft MN-500 base station lying around - but would prefer the speeds of the newer G standard.)
Thanks... guess I was hoping to use the hardware that my new board comes with. I guess it's time to hit up the TH guide for a good router... any suggestions from personal experience, or does the guide speak for itself?
Thanks,
PB
P.s. if someone knows a trick on getting the board to do what I need, I'd appreciate in knowing about it.
I use a Bussiness class router 8 port VPN FVS338 by Netgear. I have a seperate AP because they give a lot better performace. Combo units are a compromise, They share cpu and ram. With seperate componets, that does not happen. And most AP come with HiGain Antennas 5+ dbi, combo 2. Being seperat you have the advantage of getting optim coverage with out all the wires.
I would not touch anthing pre 11n or MIMO. Try to match chip sets if possiable with the wireless.
