Keep in mind that these players are not true HD-DVD players. They simply
up-convert the base DVD signal to ED or HD resolution. Many HDTVs upconvert
anyway, and it seems to me that your best bet is to find a high quality
progressive scan DVD player, run it in progressive mode, and let the TV handle
the rest. In the few instances I've seen a unit like the Samsung in question,
the up-conversion seemed to have greater effect with front-projection system
than it did on tube and RPTVs. And with a FP system, you'd probably have a nice
upscaler in-line anyway. My personal reccomendation would be to try and find a
used Denon DVD-1600. I bought an open-box unit shortly after Denon discontinued
it and have been using it on our HD-RPTV. It's one of the best quality units
I've ever seen. It's also Chroma Bug free, which is a big plus for HDTV users.

I'd wait a while before buying. Too many worthwhile products on the horizon.
For one, Samsung is getting ready to phase out the 931 for the 941, which is
supposed to have a nice Faroudja deinterlacer, HDMI connection with DVI
adapter and be able to play DVD-Audio & SACD formats. However, the upcoming
Samsung model LOOKS bland and ugly in terms of product design, if that means
anything to you. It's supposed to cost about $300.
Also, Sony is getting ready to release one (DVP-NS975V), which has HDMI and
plays SACD. It too will cost around $300, doesn't have a Faroudja
deinterlacer, but hey...it's a Sony.
Both of these should be released in the next month or so. I need a new DVD
but I plan to wait it out on the chance one of these might be better than my
current choice, the Harmon Kardon DVD-22. It doesn't have Faroudja, HDMI,
DVD-A or SACD but it still looks like a nice player. Check out the consumer
reviews at Circuit City.

My understanding is that the Samsungs, like most of the newer upconverting
DVD players, only apply upconversion to the DVI or HDMI output. If you want
upconversion through component-video, you might want to consider the Zenith
DVB318 instead. I am quite satisfied with mine.
