I want to buy a small lcd hdtv. My reasons are to improve DVD viewing and
lower power consumption than a crt---my home is powered by solar panels.

Can anyone give me some bang for buck advice?

Also, what's the expected real-world life expectancy of the illumination
source in the lcd screens?

The Dell 17" HD widescreen got excellent reviews from multiple sources.
You can probably read a review on CNet. It's also one of the more
reasonably priced sets at under $700 before any specials Dell might be
running.
