I haven't watched the market recently... but would there be a significant change in the price of 8800 GTX when the r600s hit? Or do you think it would be awhile after the r600s come out before they go down.

As I'm building a new PC, I'm wondering if there'd be any advantage to waiting a bit, or if it would just be wasted time

8800s won't go down in price much.

R600 will come out, then 8900s and 8600s will come out soon after also, and 8800 will just go away.

so.. if they go away, wouldn't that mean the price shoots down?

Also.. I see you drive a trep.. nice :)

No, new cards will be price same, and be better. Like the 7900GT. Better than a 7800GTX, yet about half the price when it came out.

The car in his avatar looks like a Dodge Viper. Same brand, different class.

As for graphics market, think of the 8800 is a tester product. They wanted to test the core fresh out of the woodwork and it's a monster, but it also runs REALLY hot and uses a ridiculous amount of ram/power.

Expect an 8900 to hit the market alongside the 8600GT/Ultra when the R600 comes out that will run faster, better, cooler and for cheaper the cost.

The 8800's will still stay at their price range, but smarter people will advance to the 8900's for more longevity.

8600 Ultra will most likely be the Direct X 10 sweet spot. A refined, cut-down G80 core that will probably still run games better than the 8800GTS.

Either that or the 8900GS or 8900GT.

Yea, kinda looks like a Viper, but it's a Trep. :)

Ah.. I think I understand what you guys mean. I appreciate your insight on this.

I did a bit more research though, and it seems like the 8900 is somewhat of a myth at this point. While there was some confirmation of the 8600 and 8300 coming about before cebit, there was no formal mention of the 8900...

That makes it so hard to decide if I want to wait for it or not.... Almost makes me want to get an eVGA card just so I can trade it in when the 8900 comes out.. but man that eVGA trade up plan scares me. It kinda looks like they have it worded so that they can get out of any tradeups they don't want to do.

If, like you said, the 8900 comes out at the price of a 8800 or lower, I'd be surprised if evga would honor their tradeup agreement.

Sigh, seriously, do you even listen to what we say?

STOP looking to Nvidia's press releases for the answers. The truth of the matter is, Nvidia won't say ANYTHING about an 8900 until it actually releases.

Want to know why? Because then people WONT buy the 8800GTX/GTS. They mentioned the 8600GT/Ultra conveniently to say, "Hey, if you want DX10 performance for cheap, you can get an 8600 later down the line but it's a very cut down version of the 8800GTX/GTS which are the BEST!! Hey hey hey!" like a middle-eastern salesmen in a New York populated street.

Why would Nvidia come out and say, "Hey we're going to release an 8900GT in the very near future that will make the 8800GTX/GTS owners that purchased their cards today look like idiots, so don't buy them!"?

They're a business, they make sales, that's their job. You can't hate them for it, you just have to be smart.

You think the G80 in the 8800GTX/GTS is final? It runs at like 75 degrees celsius full load at stock settings with a gigantamonjular cooler the size of Jesus, and in SLI it can't even run Crysis at max settings @ 1280 x 1024 with higher than 40 average FPS. Of course the G80 isn't final and it's going to be revised soon.

Nvidia wouldn't risk losing the top spot when the R600 comes out.

Expect two things to happen: R600 beats 8800GTX, Nvidia releases a new line G80 top of the line that will either BEAT or COMPETE with the R600. I'm not a fanboy, it could play both ways at this point, but don't expect the 8800 to be the best card in 6 weeks, because it WONT.

if you have your mind set on the 8800GTX then fork over the cash now cause you've got awhile to wait until the price drops.

Or wait a week or two and get an R600

WoW, do you have two 8800GTX's and the pre-alpha version of Crysis? if not, then your source is dead wrong.

There was a fake Crysis benchmark released earlier this week, so if that's where your getting your information from, then it's wrong. Crysis was running fairly smooth at the highest DX10 settings on a single 8800GTX with a res of 1280x720 at CES a few weeks ago. Once the game is released (after all the optmizing.etc) expect to play Crysis max at 1280x1024 with a single 8800GTX. Crytek are working very closely with Nvidia to try and get the game going as fast as possible on the new 8000 series graphics cards.

Nameless... do you have a source that actually has proof of the 8900? If not, then it's just speculation. You can use all the business analysis/market analysis/tech analysis/etc that you want... but until there's proof, it's still just speculation.

Considering there's *nothing* out that mentions anything about the 8900, it's shaky speculation. There's at least alpha versions of the r600 card for tests to be run against. No such card has been produced from nVidia.

While I agree w/your assesment based on past trends, as well as the faults in the 8800 that you pointed out, it's still just speculation.
