Can anyone Suggest what I should get for a HTPC/File Server?
Would I be better going with a decent desktop or and actual server? I

have checked TigerDirect.com and found a few cpu/mb combo. If I go that route would a P4 800d or 900d be best? Core Duo?

I am trying to keep the cost down that why i have been looking around. Would this server be good for my needs?

2.4GHz P4 533MHz FSB
1GB (4x256MB) ECC RAM
40GB Tape Drive
RAID 1/0 on Motherboard
Adaptec ATA 133 EIDE Controller Card

Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

i don't know the pros and cons of having a dedicated server over just a PC, but you might check on craigslist for old PCs for cheap (if it's just for storage/htpc use). i see cheap stuff on there all the time that IMO would be suitable.

just my two. :D

That P4 system will be too noisy for an HTPC - go with C2D for sure.

An HTPC and a file server will be difficult to combine. I'd want to have the file server stashed away with plenty of cooling (and thus noise) to keep everything running nicely 24/7, whereas that's not exactly what you want in your living room.

trying to keep it under 300. But in all reality couldn't I use a normal desktop say a 3.0ghz with 1-2gb of ram with as much passive cooling as possible, use it mostly as the HTPC, and just have the network be able to put file on/off & use them?
