Any body know when the cryo will finally be found in stores, ocz has had this up their sleeve for a while now, and I'm in the market for a water cooler
For those of you who don't know what the cryo even is, here is a nice look at it
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/377
and be definition, this is what a phase change is and how it works
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pump
Seeing how theinquerer got a cpuz validated x2 at 3.5ghz, I would like to get one myself, but there is no information yet on it's release date. Any thoughts?
any thoughts?
How much is it going to cost?
any ideas?
It's supposed to come out retail $350, the drop to $200 after they start getting sales, hence the cheaper than water cooling part
I still haven't found out when it releases though, and that's what I'm waiting on
This is a party?? :?
-cm
Well, my other thread turned into a massive rave because I found out about the new look at 5am monday and posted it on my thread, but I was wondering your thoughts on this. we'll make an actual party later
<whine>
Why is this in Cooler and Heatsinks! waaaa!!!!
</whine>
I like the looks of it, I wish hardware secrets would have put up some specs. In the next few years that will probably be my 24/7 operation, a step up from water cooling.
This looks awesome considering the estimated price! Vapochill LS is the only phase change system available here in Greece and it's damn expensive! It costs around 850 euro!!
If the OCZ comes around 250 then it's a great deal. I'm not willing to pay more just to get ~500 mhz more compared to my 60e aircooling solution!
I can take a freaking 6600 + 8800 gtx with 820e here! :?
I wonder when I comes out though, it can't reach -50c like the mach2 or the vapochill, but still got below -25c on a 3.5ghz amd cpu. This seems like it's going to be amazing

We don't know when it comes out though, that's why I started this thread, to see if anyone knew anything beyond what I did
they recomend covering the motherboard in silicone, won't that over heat every thing else, like the caps diodes and whatnot
So it loaded at 25C on an X2 @ 3.5? Not very impressive to me, yes the OC result is impressive, but my water loop keeps my D805 under 29C, only once have I seen it over 30, it hit 31 during an apparently pretty taxing FFT of Prime 95 at the 1 hour 15 minute mark.
no -25C, that's 25 below zero, not above
Ah, excuse me. I didn't see the "-" because of the strange format of the forum on this monitor at work. It had the "-" on the first line and the 25 on the second line
My bad! Indeed I am impressed 8)
yeah, now you see why I'm so interested in this, if I can pick this up for only $200, that means tacos for everyone on me!!
If I can get myself a barcelona to replace my x2 4000 (not sure if my crosshair supports opty's though), then I'll be one happy taco
Lol that helps explain your excitement. I will be glad to see some more legitimate reviews though. Have you found it for sale anywhere at any price?
no, I tried google, pricegrabber, everything, it's just not out yet
I think I may finally have found what is giving me my random restarts and why my oc is no longer stable!!!
So what I did was after I ran memtest and prime95 a billion times, I came to the conclusion that my cpu is stable and my memory is fine, but something linking them isn't. So then I tried ocing, and it failed badly, so I fed my cpu more voltage and set my ram at only 400mhz, still no luck. Then I decided to test if it was my vrm that was bad, so I set my ht at 250, but lower my cpu mult to 8 to keep my cpu at stock, but the motherboard stressed, and it failed just as fast as my other oc's!!! I have finally solved what's wrong with my system!!!! Now I just need to find my mobo manuel to rma it (which I have no idea where I lost it :? )
You said you have a Crosshair? How are NB temps?
not bad, they usually stay around 29-33, but I have seen it go up to 37 before, but I need to return it because I'm sick of these restarts. I don't know if I shall return it for the same mobo, or if I will sell the rma and buy a conroe after I sell my x2, I could probably afford a 4300, which is perfect for me, especially if the inflation disappears and I can get it for only $140 (add a phase change for $200, and I'll be the first taco in history to get a $140 cpu to 5ghz and perform better than anything except the x6800 at 5ghz 8O )
I WANT THE CRYO!!!!!!!! lol

wish americans could stop selling these super modified (for mcdonalized kids) pseudo tacos..
these shouldnt be even be called tacos, they look like a frigging oversized dorito.
here is a link refering to the Cryo
http://www.ocztechnology.com/aboutocz/news/50
not much other then saying that it exists.
and a picture from OCZ's booth @ CeBIT 2006
I dont think the rest of the mobo is going to get too hot covered in silicone. the hottest parts (northbridge, voltage regulator) are close enough to the CPU that residual cooling from the cpu alone should drop their temps fairly well.
too much noise and power and trouble and effort that comes with phase change cooling. it would certainly be impressive to get a core 2 duo to 5.0ghz but why would you want to...
air cooling does almost everything we need right(tuniq tower) now and cpus are moving to lower power/heat not higher like gpus. if air doesn't take care of it then you can go with water, if water doesn't take care of it you can go with TEC, there is no reason to get a phase change unit unless you have maxed out every other possible performance peace in your computer. at $350 this would not be worth it, at $200 its still more expensive than a monsoon II tec cooler which is more attractive since you would not have to worry about condensation on your mobo and less noise and space.
phase change is cool but there is no point unless you're going for a one time max oc of your cpu...
only the area around the cpu on the front and back gets covered with some insulating silicon, not all of the board
And no, the mosoon two is not more attractive, because it has a very weak tec in it and is nothing compared to this
http://www.xoxide.com/coolit-syste [...] oling.html
Which is more than $200, and still doesn't perform as good as other water coolers I've seen. Don't think I haven't compared all my options before deciding to go phase change, originally I wanted the freezone for the 7 tec's on it, then I decided to go with a custom kit, but now if I can get a phase change for $200, this cools better (you don't have to have it at -x degrees, you can make it hotter if you don't want to insulate) and is cheaper too
I remember reading that article. It looks interesting and at that price I might make the leap if/when it comes out.
My biggest curiosity though is would it be practical/possible to mod that thing to cool a GPU or two along with the CPU. Anyone have any thoughts on that I'd love to read them later when I'm off work
well, you could use it as a super rad and cool the coolant in a water cooler with it and have that flow to the gpu, but you'd run the risk of freezing the coolant, and I doubt the gpu could handle subzero temps as well as a cpu could anyway, there are more things that have the risk of getting rotten and decayed from the temps
I wonder how loud it is...
if it is to loud would sound insulating material help in getting it quieter...
I really want to see this thing in action. At $350 is will provide much better performance/$ than any other cooling setup. To get TEC right you have to build up water to remove the excess heat in order to maximize the effectiveness. Air is a joke when it comes to cooling (all be it very economical).
--general reply
I don't want to set records (I'm just not that good) but knowing I can get the most out of my processor for a few years seems worth it to me and to know that it would transfer to your next processor, that is a good feeling. Testing the limits of electronics is fun. Trying to find out exactly where that wall is is a frustrating but fun experience. Water is a good value, but if OCZ can pull this off, it will redefine value.
TEC setup: ~$300 (if you go cheap, not smart)
Water: $200 (to get a decent DIY setup)
Phase (prior to OCZ): $1000 (with everythign needed to protect your mobo)
Now: OCZ Phase at $350.... Darn good idea.
In all reality I am surprised that VapoChill has gone unchallenged for so long. I wasn't expecting a huge full on competition between 4 or 5 companies, but I was expecting at least one challenger. Tool OCZ long enough..... now just getting it to market seems to be a problem. I would expect a Q2 release if I had to guess.
Guess what? 1 QX6700 + OCZ Phase will just decimate the Quad FX platform.
Phase Changes are supposed to have some quiet hum that supposedly isn't bad at all, but isn't something you're used to like fan noise, but I think sound dampener should do the trick
you don't even need to oc teh qx to decimate qfx
But still, I really like the idea of a $300 phase change, not to mention, you need a very powerful radiator for the more powerful tecs and an auxilary psu to with it (highly suggested, not required though0 and the overall cost actually ends up around $500, I wanted to do that a long time ago when amd3d got an amd cpu to 3ghz with idle of 2C and load of 25C, but the total cost ended up too expensive for my budget, but I think that if it does find its way to $200, that's the cooling for me
I like phase change, you can cool your cpu to like -60c, and if this system actaully performs nearly on par with the other, high end systems of today it might be worth the $300 or whatever. Although if i wanted a phase change system and had the cash to buy it i would either build the it myself, or buy the unit from one of the guys on xtremesystems.
Yeah but for only $300, that's extremely cheap, the others ones are minum $800. And to be build a phase change, it's like building a fridge (in fact a phase change actually does use a lot of the same components as a fridge), so I think for $300, it's an excellent deal, plus, the price is supposed to drop to $200 after a while
Yes, I did definitely low ball TEC cooling. No qualms there.
Quad FX does get wasted by QX6700, even with just a good air cooler. Try fitting to TT Typhoons in one case.... yeah right lol.
I will say there is alot more risk involved in Phase change as compared to water or air, but if you do your due diligence they can all be mitigated. It is definitely not for mainstream or some 13 yr old bent on being the fastest with out stopping to think what could go wrong. Phase change (and tec to a good extent) are very involved processes for very thorough people. however, being an auditor (yes, I really am, make jokes as you please
) details aren't a problem lol.
well for that purpose, just run linux on a fairly powerful single core with passive coolling as a file server, should do that job, and for your information, I'm not 13...I'm 14...

I know you're not 13.... maybe 15 j/k
You'd actually be surprised how much power we need to do our audit work. Between database downloads, sorting, sampling, image embedding, croping and what not, we need a moderately powerful computer
As for my home rig... that's another story. What you don't see in the sig is that I am using a TT Mozart case with every intention of filling it up with cooling, possibly a second ITX computer and who knows what else.
Would be nice to be on a passive cooler, but man would that proc suck 8O
Phase changers usually sound like a fridge if built right.
That's because phase changes essentially are fridges
In the article they say it is the same as a refrigerator compressor which is untrue. The compressor used in phase change systems is much more heavy duty than a typical refrigerator compressor as the phase change unit will be designed to run 24/7. Similar to an industrial refrigerator's compressor that is designed because the engineers know that it will constantly be opened and closed and warm things will constantly be put in that need to be cooled.
It's been stated here before, but if you put a constant heat producing source into a regular refrigerator it will shorten the lifespan of the compressor to a fraction of it's normal MTBF.

Freudian slip? Who knows? I knew you loved me though, just not in that kind of way...
true, it's a lot more heavy duty, but it uses the same technology and the theory behind both is the same
And that is weird that your name is randomly in the middle of a post
True about the compressor.
Could my name (or the band's name?) be in the post because SuperFly03 constantly thinks about me? Most likely. Or could it be because the "k" is next to the "l"? Probably not.
| Quote : True about the compressor.

Nope, has nothing to do with the "K" being next to the "L." I really just was testing Tool, seeing if he actually reads the posts or just skims them.
You passed this one, but be on the look out. I think you underestimate my sneakyness.
Back to auditing..... I love work!

Im constanly listening to tool (im listening to Vicarious from the album 10,000 days as i type this.), but i dont constantly think about you.
Or do i? 8O
I haven't listened to tool in years. I used to have 3 or 4 CD's of theirs, I wonder where they went. Anyone have a "tool" for finding lost CD's?
you really want to see if tool's paying attention don't ya

that tool would be torrents
but you can only download the ones you actually own...
big brother is watching...
{edit} I think we are getting off topic. But is there that much more we can say about Cryo?{\edit}
