I am going to build or buy a computer in about 3-4 months and I was wondering what CPU should I get? I want a intel, cause I think they are faster. I would like a PCI-E and with dual Video cards. I just can't figure out what CPU is the BEST/FASTEST. My brother has a intel and he saids he doesn't overclock it and it runs at 3.2 Ghz. Is there a faster one?

Keep reading the site for the next 3-4 months and learn a little about what is up and coming in that time frame.

Ask that question again with a few more specifics such as budget and intended use. Clock speed (Ghz) doesn't matter much anymore, so don't fall for that. Currently the two fastest CPU's you can buy are the QX6700 and the X6800 from Intel. Clocked at 2.66ghz and 2.93ghz respectively. Even the E6300 @ 1.83Ghz would destroy your brothers P4 or Celeron @ 3.2Ghz.

The "fastest" CPU ever is a 3.8GHz Pentium 4 EE but that is only it;'s STOCK FREQUENCY and nothing more, because a 2.6GHz Athlon64 FX55 kicks off the 3.8G P4. You'd better have a look at the CPU charts and get an idea. A good and cheap CPU could be a X2 3600+ or a X2 3800+, or an E4300, E6300 but please, don't mention anymore the P4 nor refer to a fast CPU talking about it's frequency

I would like to reiterate that in 3-4 months, things will be different. Like I said originally, stick around and read the site until you are ready to build your rig and repost this question. Currently the CPUs taco mentioned would be great buys, but with pricing changes and a few new models coming out from Intel, the next few months could slightly change your options.

My price range for the whole computer should be around $1,500-800. I don’t need a monitor/mouse/keyboard. What would you guys say is better? And why?

Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler 3.73GHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

Or

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail
This is a dumb question, but what’s the difference between 2 x 2MB vs. 2 x 4MB.

The QX6700 runs at 2.66 Ghz and the X6800 runs at 2.93 Ghz according to newegg.com. I saw on newegg that the CPU Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler runs at 3.73 Ghz. Doesn't that mean that the Intel-P EE 965 Presler is faster/better? Am I right? Or what am I missing?

you're missing something, the days of the ghz are over. The reason why the fx-62 beat the 3.73ghz was because of the better architecture (to make it very simple, the pipelines were too long in the presler and conroe and windsor have shorter ones). But when conroe came out, the effeciency per clock was even greater than am2's, so even the e6700 demolished the fx-62, it only tied with the e6600. So taking that into consideration, a cpu at 2.93ghz with very high efficiency and 4 instructions per clock demolishes a pathitically made presler at 3.73ghz

Don't worry about it, many people make the same mistake (which is why the presler is still more than the core 2 extreme, though it's a lot weaker). To help people not make this mistake again, DaClan (my idea to do this) will be testing an e4300 at 1.8ghz to the presler at 3.73ghz and then we will oc the e4300 to 3.73ghz just to show people how much power you can get out of a cheap $160 cpu

Thank you that is the answer that I wanted! I think I will just wait till the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield gets cheapers. I want to run dual BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC 256MB PCI-E video cards with 2-4gb of ram. with a good mo-bo. You think I will get all of that under 1,500 to 1,800?

OK, get the QX6700 and stop mentioning anything with 'pentium'.

ok kewl thanks! You think If I really wanted to blow my money I could get 2 8800gts? HAHAHAH thats funny!! If so At the beginning of HL2 I better see the blackheads on garrys face! Doesnt the 8800GTs run at x16? is the 8800GTS PCI-E?

...what to say,...overall, this is not a good period to buy/upgrade; stagnating (if not slightly rising) prices, better chips to be released soon,...I'd only upgrade for a strong reason now, or otherwise would wait.

...and knowing AMD, their 65nm process will mature on the way ramping higher frequencies; there's going to be a pretty nice picture near 2008

Just in time for their 45nm process with high-k and metal dielectrics. Only time will tell how AMD's 65nm turns out. Their 90nm process rocked all kinds of socks, so maybe it will happen again.

It just occurred to me that all the processing power that lies in the next two or three years is being tarnished in my mind by the spread of TCP and hardware-enabled DRM...DRM in general. Sorry, that was completely random.
