im about to order a x1950 pci-e but im worried about my current psu its 450w. on the recommendations for this card says minimal of450w psu and something about 22amp on pci-e rails. i dont know if i have these "pci-e" rails but i did have a agp 7800gs hooked up to this psu. will i need to buy a new psu or is my current one good enough?

What x1900 card are you getting GT, Pro, XT, XTX?

Can you show or tells us the brand and the model number of your PSU or maybe a site which has specs for it?

Could not find any info on that PSU. Probably you will need a new PSU. You will need to make sure the PSU can supply about around 24amps on the combined +12v rails.

codegen 300x1 is a no brand PSU i would not trust it. Your best bet would be to get a new PSU and not risk damaging other components in your system. What is the rest of your sig?

ATI recommends 28A on the 12v rail for 1950pro (if there's no overclocking and few extra system components - less will do.

Open your computer case and look at the side of the powersupply. The lable on it will tell you the amp on the 12V rail.
it says
+3.3 16a
+5v 40a
+12 16a
+5sbvsb 2a
-5v 0.5
-12v 0.8a

i did have a agp 7800gs hooked up to it i belive used to cables to power it. also what about a bfg 7900gs unlocked and OC, will that let me run bf2 with good settings???

Yep, so your powersupply is only capable of putting out 16 amps on the 12V rail. That is pretty low. Now depending on how many other items you have hooked up in your case, you probably do not have enough amps left over to "safely" run a newer video card.

If you only have one hard drive, one CD/DVD Rom, NO USB devices, no sound card, etc... you MAY, just may, be able to get by with it, but I doubt it. Even if you are just barely able to run the new video card, you may be helping to cause it to overheat. Why? As the video card tries to draw the amps it needs from you weak psu, there is just not enough "juice" to give it, so it causes things to go horribly wrong! lol :)

My recommendation would be to purchase a new psu. Get one that has an amp rating in the high 20's, like 28, or higer in the 30's if possible. The wattage is not quite so critical like the amps, but since you are going to purchase a new psu anyway, get one that will last you for a few years. So, consider the 650 watt psu's as a minimum. But again, the amps are the MOST important. So, if you find a 500 Watt psu that can deliver 30+ amps on the 12V rail, that should do you for the future unless you plan on trying to run 2 video cards in SLI. In that case - get a 700 Watt psu as a minimum and be sure the amps are close to if not over 30 amps.

Note that with multi-rail psu's, you can not simply add the amps of the various 12V rails together to get the total amps. It does not work that way.

ok so now im a bit confused.. the bfg 7800gs agp i had on this psu requires " A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 20A or more)"http://www.bfgtech.com/7800GS_256.html.
the system ran fine and i have 3 hd's a cd burner and a dvd player. the side of this psu say +15v 16a soo whats going on here??

Yeah, it is a bit confusing. What you are experiencing is the same as someone playing russian roulette. After a few clicks and nothing happens, they wonder what's so bad about playing it!! :)

Seriously though, the psu companies and video card companies, etc.. don't make it easy for us to understand. So, don't feel bad about that. There is a lot of variation within various psu companies as to what their specs really mean.

Correction : If you read carefully x1950 manual says : 450w and 30A on 12v rail for single card and 38A on 12v rail for crossfire.
