I am not intending to dual-boot, since I am intending on phasing out 98
once all the files I need are copied to XP from the 98 side.

New config:
Master: New XP Pro drive with NTFS (probably will have three
partitions...new C/D/E)
Slave: Soon to be old 98 with FAT32 (Current drive with C/D/E/F)

I will not boot to 98...I just want to boot into XP Pro, copy all the
files from the Win98 partitions into the the XP drive.

All the files I need on the 98 disk are in the soon to be "old" C: and
E:

The questions are:

Will I have problems copying files from the 98 disk to the XP disk in
XP?
Will the "old" C: and E: be "new" F: and H: ?

Thanks again!

Install XP without connecting the old drive. Once you have XP up and running
then connect your old drive as a primary slave.

Just finished doing the same thing. I would leave the old drive
connected. I already had two drives so copied my C:\ drive files with
to the slave drive. I left win 98 as is on my soon to be xp drive since
I had an upgrade, and xp recognized that I was fine for the upgrade.

During the installation of xp you can partition the xp drive and format
it to ntfs, if you have not already done that. i used the info on
western digitals site for the how to partition drives using win xp. Very
clear and not as confusing as I found the directions to be when
following the xp installation directions (though once I saw what was
intended, it was clear). The key here is to partition and format. My
first try (with all the fire warnings) I just installed it and you are
left with all the old files on your C: drive with no good way to get rid
of them. I could not understand how I had no disk space after I though
xp had removed win 98. It did replace 98 but left all else the same. So
when I did the partition and format, I got a clean install and only xp
on C:.

I also made three partitions, and as windows does, your xp, C:\ drive
will have c, e, and f and the slave will be d,g,h...

I did not format the slave to ntfs and had no problem transferring files
from the slave to the master. I will be formating my slave to ntfs since
that is why I shifted, to be able to make files larger than 2/4 gigs. I
capture large video files and go tired of having to work with several
files when I only wanted one.

I did learn that I made my C:\ partition a bit on the small side at 9
gigs, but since I use my E: drive for most of my programs and My
Documents, C: is about 60% full (after turning off hibernation). I would
make it 12-15 gigs or so, depending on what you use it for. If you put
all your programs and My Documents on C:, 20 gigs would be about right
with hibernation and do not change pagefile. (I had a 30 gig drive so
mine were 9,10 and 15+. I have no problem working with that. My slave is
100 gig for the video files.)

Before I change the file structure, I intend to format the slave drive.
I burned my old win 98 files to dvd so just in case, I have old settings
that I need (I had to dig them up for some of my shifted programs,
things like dlls and ini files). The stuff that will go back to my d,g,h
partitions will be copied first to my f: drive and then back to the now
formatted ntfs slave, so it is also clean.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the helpfulness of this group, and
you will be also. I am sure someone will point out a better way, but
this is what worked for me.

I am also surprised by xp. I should have made the move long ago.
