I just got the Sony KF-50WE610 and a Samsung DVD player with DVI output. My
problem is that the DVI output looks scrambled...just a bunch of colored
blocks on the screen. Any idea what's going on? I know that the Sony DVI
input is not PC compatible for copy protection purposes. Is that the
problem?

The DVD player is a Samsung DVD-HD841.

If you read the book, it will talk about changing the upconvert to the LCD.
The problem is that the DVD player is probably putting out 1080, and your
LCD is only accepting 720.

Doesn't anyone read manuals anymore?

I don't see a thing in the manual about it. The DVD manual is pretty thin
and doesn't mention what 'mode A' and 'mode B' DVI output are (neither of
which work) and I can't find any other adjustments.

The 50WE610 isn't native 768p, it's actually 788p (GWII sets are 768p, the
WE610 is a GWIII). At any rate, these sets aren't really designed to accept
or process anything other than standard HDTV resolutions, like 720p or
1080i.

You might want to get a disc like Avia and see if there's any noticable
resolution difference between running the DVD in 720p or 1080i on your set.

Do not use the component output on the Samsung DVD players. They bypass
the Faroujda DCDi circuitry completely as they did on the older model
(931?). It's a known design shortcut, which I believe is still in the
newer players.

If you are unhappy with the DVI picture, return the player and get
another progressive scan player.

Web sites with specific tech discussions on the 50W610 have reported that
you should use your DVI to the TV with he player set to interlaced mode and
leave the conversion up to the TV set. Most tests by users suggest that this
TV does a superior job to must players. Put it this way, even if you
player's conversion to 720p or 1080i were perfect, this TV would have to
covert it again to its native display resolution which is neither 720p or
1080i. Let the TV do the conversion and it gets converted just once and not
twice. Make sense?

But things change so try it both ways and use your eyes.

Richard.

The Sony set has only one DVI input, how are you handling your cable box?
Does the DVD player have a DVI input so you can switch between cable and
DVD?
