I am trying to securely share a drive on my server with a few users in other states. All systems are XP. Internet connection is DSL. What do I need (hardware, software) to let a few people have a secure/private mapped network drive on my server?

I think you should look into hamachi. It will allow encrypted windows file shareing over the internet. It is not as secure as a VPN, but is very easy to impliment as hamachi supports NAT traversal.

If you don't want a VPN connection, you can use Serv-U to create an FTP site on your computer.
You can share files and set passwords and id's for accessing your site. You can create a static ip address through DynDNS.
