I know this question has been asked a lot so please forgive me. I’m building a new rig and the only thing I haven’t decided on is the PSU. I know the PSU is one of the most important things so that’s why I’m asking for some advice.
Right now my rig will have a
C2D E6600
Asus P5NE-SLI 650i
2GB kit DDR2-800 of Crucial Technology Ballistix BL2KIT12864AA804
eVGA 8800GTX
1 300GB 7200RPM IDE hard drive
1 160GB SATA hard drive
1 DVD-RW/DVD+RW
Sound Blaster Audigy Pro sound card
Font bay fan controller
4 80mm fans.
I used the extreme power supply calculator and even at 100% Power Supply Utilization it only said I need a PSU that was 403 watts. This didn’t seem right, I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or not. I thought that I would need at least a 600W PSU, no more then 700W, so it seemed that 650W would be just right.
Someone recommend to me to get a Corsair HX620. The reviews for it on newegg were all 100% and sounded like a good PSU and the fact that Seasonic makes it isn't bad either. What do you guys think/recommend and can you give me some good named brand PSU companies to choose from. I’ve heard OCZ, Thermaltake, PC Power & Cooling, Antec, Seasonic are good ones, but I’m not sure. Thanks for the advice in advanced.
The quick & dirty way to figure out what your PSU requirements are, calculate for your +12v demand only in the psu calc...

eXtreme PSU calc[/url]"]System Type: Single Processor
Motherboard: Regular - Desktop
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2400 MHz Conroe
CPU Utilization (TDP): 100% TDP
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Video Type: Single Card
IDE HDD 7200 rpm: 1 HDD
SATA HDD: 1 HDD
DVD-RW/DVD+RW Drive: 1 Drive
Fan Controller: Yes
Fans
Regular: 4 Fans 80mm;
Keyboard and mouse: Yes
PSU Utilization: 100 %
Total: 359 Watts
just divide by 12v and you get a good estimate of a max/worst case +12v PSU demand: ~30A. So I usually make that the 80% mark so a PSU w/ at least 38A (30A/.8 ) or better should do well.
The Antec TP3-550 ($90 shipped) at 42A would do very well at a really great price. A bit more gets you the TP3-650 ($108 shipped) at 52A you have plenty of upgrade capacity or years of expected service.
