Need some more information.

What case and power supply do you plan to use?
What is the make and model of the RAM?

Do you have any other components you can use? Hard drive or optical drives? If so again please provide make and model.

I doubt you will be able to put together a Core 2 Duo with a mid range graphics card and all the other components you need for $400 - $500. In fact you might be better off buying a budget system like eMachines.

But please provide the additional information so people can take a look.

I do not think the old RAM will work with most LGA775 MB, they take DDR2. (240? pin) Maybe you shold back down a step, find something compatible and also save money. There is always a chance you can match the RAM to a newer MB, maybe others will a an idea. I do like the GPU choice, x1950 or v79xx will serve you well on a budget even though it might be half your money. If that bothers you, drop down one step there also to a x1600 or v7600 ( or there are cheap v7900GS for like $130). CPU might look at an AMD 64 or 64 x2 with the AM2 slot. Still might hit the RAM problem but I am thinking the is a little more low end boards for AMD

My 3 yr old pc runs prey on full at 112 fps avg, take a step back, grab a 3X00+ AMD Athlon 64 series an 939 mobo with support 184pin, i suggest ASUS for this one. grab a X800XT or better and your set. thats some cheap parts nowadays.

Nope I did some checking. There is no C2D MB w/ DDR 400 Ram listed in Newegg. You can go to a 939 socket AMD 64 x2 like this one
Asus 939 AMD 64 x2 MB

No C2D mobo that will support DDR400?

This one even has slots to step up to DDR2 some day.

Given enough time, I knew someone would find a solution. Looks like a very good board. You will be limited to 1 gig with your RAM, and you might find some who needs the other gig of "old" RAM and buy it. Nice Spot RJ and am glad to admit when I am wrong. The OP will be in great shape with a MB>$60

yea i saw those Mb's but 1 its a micro atx. 2 its got onboard video.

I'd say that might be your best bet. Or at least, a decent way to go. I was actually very close to going with that combo myself (Im trying to build a decent gaming system on a very tight budget also) but I didn't like the MoBo because it lacks 1394. Still might get it though.

From what I understand, the newer Brisbane core X2's (like the one you're looking at) are better than the Windsor cores in terms of energy efficiency, but they aren't as good if you want to OC (although I'm sure you could still OC the brisbane to a decent speed). So it's a toss-up depending on what's more important.

The 7600GT is also a great card for the price.

I like this setup considering the budget...maybe someone else has another idea?

Okay you have 400-500 to work with?

Guess what, I only have 500-600 to work with and I built a rig that will destroy yours.

If you step down and go with Socket 939, your upgrade path is severely limited. Especially when DirectX 10 kicks the door down and says, "HAY GUYZ HOUZ UR DUEOH COREZ WERKIN? LOL".

This is my recommendation:
Intel Pentium D 805 $90
Gigabyte S3 $100
1 GB DDR667 Corsair XMS2 $81

That puts you at $271. At that point, $130-230 to work with.

You have:
Case, Power-supply, Hard-drives and I'm guessing Operating System. (Yar yar pirates ahoy)

If you spend the full $500 budget, you can get a cheap $28 DVD burner on Newegg and that leaves you a cool even $200 budget for a video-card.

I recommend EVGA 7900GS. That way, when mainstream DirectX10 cards come out in the near future, he gets a free upgrade to an 8600Ultra or 8800GS or something of that sort. (EVGA has a "Step-Up" upgrade program, as long as you don't abuse your cards or damage them, you can upgrade to a newer card.)

With this build: Pentium D 805, Gigabyte S3, Corsair XMS2 1GB and EVGA 7900GS, you can play Prey at max settings, Half Life 2 at max settings and Lord of the Rings Online at super max settings. :D

Going that route, you only spend about $190.

Total budget spent? $271 + 30 + 160 = $461.

You end up saving $39. You can use that money to go out with your brother and eat and celebrate the genius of NamelessMC that saved you from the darkest depths of Low-Resolution gaming and brought you to the paradise that is known as 4xAA 8xAF + Max.

The system you recommended is

Gigabyte P965 S3 - 126.99 + 6.13 = $133.12
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128012

Pentium D 805 - $92

Corsair XMS2 DDR2 675 - 79$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145539

$304.12

With NEC DVD burner - $29.99 + $4.99 = $34.98
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6827152076

$339.10

EVGA 7900GS graphic card - $154.99 (after rebate) + $5.64 = $160.63
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814130056

$499.73 after shipping

Newegg.com isn't the answer, buddy.

I never recommend Newegg.

The only things I recommend people buy from Newegg is maybe Hard-drives.

Motherboards - Mwave.com
Ram - Thenerds.net / Mwave.com
Video-cards - Mwave.com

Gigabyte S3 965P $109.18
Mwave Gigabyte S3

EVGA 7900GS 256MB KO Edition $164.19
TheNerds.net 7900GS no rebate $164

The Pentium D is pretty much as cheap at Newegg as anywhere else. Same with ram.

Remember:
resellerratings.com offers you the best price comparison along with reseller evaluations.
Pricegrabber.com offers a zip code criteria that shows you the best TOTAL price including shipping AND tax if applicable along with reseller ratings.

Ironically, newegg is only at the top of about 35% of my product searches on Pricegrabber and Newegg is a featured seller there.
