Finally some more r600 information
Last response: in Graphics & Displays
Hey guys, check this out, I know it's the inquerer, and it seems kinda far fetched to me, but take a look at this, 4gigs of gpu memory??!!! 8O 8O
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37529
This is going to servers only as far as I know, but for whoever needs some massive memory for photoshop and video editing, this is your chance finally to get that dream memory without paying something like $200 bucks extra for ecc memory (4gigs only recently came to non-buffered)
And for all guys that have been waiting for r600 pics, here it is
![]()
This thing is massive for the oem builders, at 12.4" and 270watts, but the retail is far better, being smaller than the 8800gtx at only 9.5" and 240watts, now just for some benchmarks....
Additional information here
http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4622
since vr-zone has this information, I say it's pretty safe to go off of, but be prepared for any last second changes
ohh, and I'm just in love with that cooler they have strapped on that baby, I think I may end up buying an r600 just to see how high I can clock it from stock compared to an acs3 evga 8800gtx

Staggering but still the graphic boys need to shrink to 65nm or lower. Designs like these using older processes are just getting out of hand. 270W power draw?!
Also to note the lower end cards will require the new 8-pin PCIe power connector to be rolled out en-masse by the PSU companies this quarter.
The 2/4GB boards we've been hearing about are for "stream computing" tasks like running folding@home or science and/or financial related computations where massive FP power is required. A scientist's wet dream. These cards will be custom tailored for such tasks and will only have one DVI port, not to mention be totally impractical for "menial" tasks like gaming or general use.

no that's not true, the 9 inch boards are not only the xt and xl versions with gddr3 memory, it's also the more expensive retail r600. And also I don't think the r600 is going to have monsterous clocks beyond memory because of the gddr4, the gpu core is actually going to be clocked lower because of ati's experience form the xbox360 in dx10, so they have designed the more efficient card, the conroe if you will compared to the x2. The 8800gtx right now is the x2 if you will, demolishing, lets say the other cards are netburst, they came out first, and are cheaper, but the effiency on this baby is far better. And I think the cooling's gonna stay just to keep people happy so they don't have to bear with the noise the gtx's fan has, this fan will probably run a lot slower

Yeah, I just got done reading the article on VRZone. Sorry, it seems you were right and now it's time for the blunt to backpedal. I've edited my post accordingly. Still I wonder if these will show up in places ( because they are able to achieve crazy overclocks with this cooler?) here and there.
Hey at least I'll admit when I was wrong... [/whoops]

OK, first of all, first line in the original posted article says, "A friendly mole sent me pictures of ATI's DX10 R600 videocard - I can't vouch that these are "real", but nevertheless looks interesting: ". http://overclockers.com/articles1411/
Now, I'm not saying they aren't real, but can you say "prototype"?
the final version is not always what you see in the test environment. I find it interesting how many people are spouting as gospel, "facts", that have been disputed on several reputable sites. Again, not to say that some of it doesn't contain a bit of the truth, but keep in mind, AMD has NOT released official photos or specs of the card, so anything you hear or read, unless it's based on a board provided by AMD, is to be taken with a grain of salt.
To follow up on TheInquirer's own article, they published this, which some folks apparently forgot to read.

Very nice cooling, I have a zalman vf-900 myself. But I have a 6600gt that is in the same range of your card, so don't feel bad

OEMs don't care if it's 12 inches long as long as it doesn't mess up their power and heat envelope. There's a heck of alot of room in a case, you just need to know how to place it, and OEMs are going to want a cool quiet card more than somethig that's going to fit in an SFF Shuttle case.
thx for the info, but somehow i just prefare to go with "active" cooling(iI guess i feel it has beter cooling), and i wanted to get the ac5rv2 because i like the exhaust design, which i have to admit did reduce my ambient temps, lol I guess ill have to wait till the dx10 cards come out and will go down a bit in price to get a new gpu lol, because teh only ac5 i found was overpriced up to $58, which i think is jut way 2 much for this kind of a cooler(and this card;))

Since the site says it's going to be 9.5" long for retail and12.4" long for OEM. I assuming the extra 3" inches is from the fan.
If the fan is taken out, then it's 9.5" long? If that is the case, then
where will the fan be for the retail version?
lol maby it will be on top, or in th esenter (inbetwean fins) ..... ...lol but still possible, but i guess it wouldnt be as effective then thou
Same place it currently is, On top of the card, not on the end of it.
Currently the fan is integrated into the HSF assembly and mounted onto the PCB to fit the length of the card.
BTW, notice that the OEM version actually has almost an inch of dead space between the end of the fan and the end of the braket, I wonder where the measurement is taken.

Yeah. I saw the pics and all this morning and I'm still drooling like Pavlov's dog. As soon as it comes to the market, as long as the benches show its really that good, the MasterCard comes out and the scores go up. Now all they need to do is make a game that will really use all the power.

On top?!
If that is the case, then R600 will be the first card to require
3 slots! 8O

lol i was thinking about that but i doubt it, i was thinking maby of having the fan a bit ofset from the center among tyhe fins(which would be cut off or filed down more so that the fan would not stick out so much , so basically when installed it would pull air in form the right side, and push air out at the left side, but im not shoor if that would be efficient

Well the GF7800GTX-512 onward and X1950XT already need 3 slots because otherwise you're blocking their 2 slot cooler with something. The last high ends that could do true '2 slot' would be the GF7800GTX-256 which wa a single slot facing the 2 slot, and the X1900XT that was 2 slot drawing air from the back of the card across the card (similar to the OEM version we see here) allowing you to put something right up next to it.
If it's a blower type HSF assemble that matches the X1950XT then you're still stuck with the same air intake issue as the GF8800GTX has, so that 3rd slot item would have to be a tiny nothing card or else it will block the airflow.
What would be nice would be if the OEM's blower could be flipped to face either way so you're drawing either cool air from in front or behind the card depending on the orientation (ATX, BTX, or reverse ATX). That would be a nice feature.
that would be nice, and do you mean this xtx?
gaah, the image's code doesn't work, so it's the his version
What I really want is just a very nice cooler on the r600 that will keep it very cool and very quiet, size is no issue for me, because I could just take out the top hdd section and give myself an extra 6" or so. Of course, I won't be able to afford one for a very long time, but still, I would like to see more coolers like that that involve more cooling and less random pictures that don't cool anything at all, and bigger fans would be nice, the 30mm fans that they have in some of the older cards are just too small to cool anything, not to mention the only thing they are blowing on is some cheap aluminum that is pasted onto the card.

You might wana fix your link (you linked to the page not the image so it won't work).
Yeah this one;

Although the reference is this one as seen beside nV's, and Sapphire special Toxic Liquid cooler;

And yeah the puny crap HSF are just that, crap. Better to have a big good one than a small crap one.
Always seemed to be a good idea Arctic Cooling and HIS learned early enough.

Well AC actually developed the coolers for both the X1800/x1900 (and the same X850 series HSF) as well as the X1950 HSF.
And of course HIS has been using them (AC) since the R9800 generation.

AC's always been pretty close to the top of the league, but who knows what the retail card will look like. The OEM is a known quantity, the water cooling will likely look like an Asetek solution, but the retail might just be an improved version of the X1950 HSF or a completely new design.

I've liked Sapphire's Toxic cooler in that it drops the temp and is very quiet. Unfortunately I've been having trouble with the video card itself and am either going to have to replace it or if I'm lucky, Sapphire will take it back on a RMA. Last I heard, they are no longer making a X1900 XTX Toxic, so an RMA may be difficult. Live and learn, and buy new cards.

Yeah, that would happen. But since a California judge decided that my ex-wife of 17 years deserved some of my money, I'm out $6800. anyway.
May as well buy something to have fun with, rather than just loose it supporting her.
I'm sorry to hear that sailor, I hope you can get that fixed, if not, see if they will let you step up for the x1950 xtx (or crossfire) toxic, if not, this is an option too

lol i have to say if it will be quiet thats important lol, im still using a sapphire x850xt with the stock hsf(cant find the ac5 anywhere) and i have to say that the noiz is realy geting on my nerves a lot while gaming, or any other gpu intensive work.I used to have the X800 GTO2 which was a great card! But I just got the Sapphire X1950 XT with the AC X2 cooler, and I must say what a differrance. Very quiet fan and keeps card really cooled.
Very happy with the upgrade!
