I am connected with Wave Broadband cable. I am on the WRT54G v.6, firmware 1.0.1.0. I've done port forwarding and disabled dhcp and turned off firewall. I've done tests without the router, when without the router it works fine, but with it, it goes to very slow, probably below 10kb dl/ul. I've lowered the MTU (if that does anything) still same.
Is there a router that can stand heavy dl/ul usage?

Would that one work?
If I were to get a router (without wireless, that would be better right?), would all I have to do is connect a cable to the wireless router (through the router?) and that's it?

Thanks.

Hi,

I think we need some more information like, Model# of cable modem and also the card on your computer.

With the card there are Some things you can try

* Download latest driver for the card and update it
* Try changing the power managemnt of the card to maximum.
* Set the channel number to Auto or manually set it to 1 or 6 or 11 as the way it is set on router. 1/6/11 are non overlappable channels and are suited for wireless to work properly.
* If you have latest Intel cards like 3945, in the card properties look for ADHOC QOS mode and choose the option to "Disable WMM".
*If you have a laptop, make sure that you reseat the Main/aux antenna for the card which should do better.
* You can also upgrade BIOS to latest revision.

With the router there are some more things you can try

* Reset the router (make sure your settings on the router are well understood before you do this, if you have problems after resetting router, call up linksys to have it setup)
* Try changing the MTU size on the router and also try and set the same MTU size on your windows xp. Try a lot usually around 1400-1500 should do better.
* Make sure channel numbers are 1 or 6 or 11 and try changing this channel number until you get a batter throughput.
* If there are any firmware upgrades for the router please do so

As far as other things go besides the router and the card, try some of these.

* Make sure you are not using any other wireless devices with 802.11 standards or RF standard electronic devices such as, Cordless phones, Microwave owen, etc
* Force the MTU size in windows xp.
* Check the through put in windows xp safe mode with networking.

Happy working on this issue and do let me know if it worked and also let me know the model# or cable modem and your card.

If you are getting speeds that slow, it must be something wrong with your router. Linksys WRT54G V6 isn't the best router in the world, but it has better performance than that. I would get in touch with Linksys support and have them send you a replacement because that sounds messed up. Or, try resetting everything on your router and starting from scratch or something like that (it could be a configuration issue).
