Just bought myself a x1950 pro but i have a huge problem

The card works fine when im in windows, but when i run a game after about 1 minute of play the display starts to corrupt. If I then return to windows the corruption is there as well.

First i thought it might be my PSU but i dont believe that to be the case as my Motherboard voltage never drops below 11.98v.

I installed ATI TOOL and ran the "Find Artifacts" test i watched as my gpu temp increased from idle of about 41c to 60+c in a few seconds, unfortunately i cant tell you what the final temperature was as my screen freezes and i have to reset to get my display back.

If i underclock my card and manually adjust the fan to 100% RPM it will last a little longer until it stops.

Is it a cooling problem as i think??

Hi, I had exactly the same problem.. Yes it is cooling but it's the cooling of a little black chip down at the end of the card where the power supply is connected. I bought a zalmann kit to cool my card but it didn't help my problem until I stuck one of the little spikey memory coolers on this chip and from there I've had no problems. Just to confirm the chip that needs cooling is on the fan side, the pci-e interface side and down near the power connector. Hope this helps

It could be a cooling issue, but 60C is not hot for a graphics card chip.

Whatever the problem is, you should just RMA the card. It is not fit for purpose.

It is a cooling Issue, but it is not the GPU temperature that is getting too high so the 60c reading is not relevant. It's one of the other chips on the board as I stated above. I do agree with Ethel though, I guess you should get it RMA'd although it is a very simple non-warantee breaking fix. This is a problem that has plagued a lot of connect3d x1950 pro's so my advice is either put the memory cooler on that chip or if you send it back ask for a different brand.

Reply to jayleblake

jayleblake, can you provide a picture to point it out?
What is a Memory cooler? I never seen it before. A link would help.
I am experiencing the same problems of overheating at 67C and card turning off.

.

The coolers are called passive memory coolers from Zalmann and they are self adhesive. The chip is indicated on the picture

Do you have good case air flow?
What PSU do you have?
60C is NOT hot for a video card. And the little chips they are talking about are the MOSFET's They should be fine.

I too have a Connect X1950pro and have a similar problem but it only happens with the new Crysis demo. I've monitored the GPU temp and the screen turns into a checkerboard when the temp gets to about 73 degrees.
My systems ambient temp is around 32deg and the GPU idles at around 51deg which seems a bit high so I am looking at changing the fan for a Zalman VF900.
As a temporary meassure I have a tower fan next to the base unit and if I turn that on it seems to the keep temp down enough to be able to play the game with everything on full :)
I'll have a look at putting a heatsink in that chip though just in case it works.
I've also just bought a Powercoler X1950 pro so I can use them in crossfire mode. Before I do I will swap the Connect with the Powercoler one and see if I get the same overheating problem.

I've got my new Powercolor card installed with its Artic Cooler Accereo fan on and the temps have dropped significantly. The GPU idles at just 39 deg and under load playing Crysis on max settings only goes up to about 54. I even overclocked the card and it didn't go above 56 - I'm totally impressed. I dont know if it's purely down to the Artic Cooler fan or if its reporting the temps wrong. The only bugbear with the card is that it didn't come with a crossfire bridge connector. I've got one that came with the connect card but it needs to 2 to work so now I have buy one and they are about £16 :(

Ok here is my problem I have the connect3d ATI x1950 pro pci-e 512 mb. I installed the heatsinkers and the Artic Cooler Accereo s1 + turbo. The card used to reach 70 degrees and then all the image was corrupted. The temperature has lowed after the heatsinkers and the Artic fans. And here´s what i don´t get. The card now reaches 45 degrees and the system either reboots or the image is all wrong. Any ideas? I run a Tyan thunder 2895 a Thermaltake armor chasis (it has 7 fans in it) dual opteron 875 dual core. Thanks!!

Maybe the GPU is cool but something else isn't. Is that card one with MOSFETs or the old VRM chip design?

Reply to randomizer

The card looks just like the picture above.( http://www.webspawner.com/users/ja [...] %20pic.jpg ) I belive that would be vrm chip.... wich have both the artic colling and the zalman´s heatsinkers cooling down.... Im really lost on this one...
Thanx in advenced

I took some pictures of the card so you can see all the heatsinkers and the cooling system:

See that chip on the left, it still makes no contact with anything, so it's cooling hasn't improved at all.

Reply to randomizer

That chips uded to have a heatsinker before I installed the accero s1. But the problem was the same that´s why I imstalled the new cooling system.

What power supply do you have? Rebooting can be caused by an overloaded or faulty PSU.

Reply to randomizer

a thermaltake ATX 12V 2.2 Series
650W
W0104
2 6 Active Black 52A
(12V1~12V4)
80 Plus
NVIDIA SLI-Ready Certified PSU

The system only reboots when the card is stressed. I did a 3dsmax render that took 90 hours and the system was all right. Im sure is something with the card

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Yep your PSU is powerful enough by far, though it could still be faulty. As far as I know 3DSMax renders only really use the CPU, whereas a game uses the card too (which pulls several more amps), and if the PSU is faulty it may be just tipping it over. Seems unlikely though, the card may be faulty, maybe you should send it back if it's still under warranty.

Reply to randomizer

yeah the problem is that I bought it trough amazon.com and it was sometime ago they only accept 30 days returns. The other problem is that I live in Colombia (south America) and they dont have any representation here. I have tried to contact Connect3d but they havent reply :(

Reply to Rafael Jordan

It should still be covered with a minimum 1 year manufacturers warranty, everything is.

Reply to randomizer

Yeah its 2 years but I dont know hot to replace it.

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Connect3D should take it, I don't know if amazon lets you do it through them. In Aus we don't ship it direct to the manufacturer, we ship it to the retailer.

Reply to randomizer

Yeah I though so that´s why wrotte to them but they did not answered back. I also read somewhere that the company is broke :( Do you have any idea on how to contact Connect3d?

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Email or phone, thats all I can think of.

Reply to randomizer

They dont display the phone number at the webpage. I think I lost my money on this one

Reply to Rafael Jordan

looks that way god damn it I lost 275 bucks!!! + all the sinkers and coolers! I guess I´ll go with nvidia

Reply to Rafael Jordan

The cooler will work on either the new ATI or Nvidia cards. And it cost me $311 so I feel your pain (except mine still works) :(
EDIT: not sure about the 3870X2 or 9800GX2 cards.

Mine works perfect the only flow is when I play games. But my pc is way too powerful not to play :)

Time for an 8800GT or HD3870 methinks!

Reply to randomizer

you thin the PNY GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB Graphics Card will do it?

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Na don't get the 320/640mb GTSs anymore, they're old tech. Get the 512mb 8800GT or the 512mb HD3870.

Reply to randomizer

any particular brand for the 8800gt I dont believe in ati no more!

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Well ATI only make the GPU itself, not the rest of the card :| Actually ATI don't make any of it, TSMC do

Are you after a cooler that exhausts out the back of the case? Palit/XpertVision have an interesting non exhausting cooler on their cards. Only one year warranty though, but it keeps the price down.

Reply to randomizer

I just wanna play crisys at the best and do editing and 3d. Im not sure what I need for that

Reply to Rafael Jordan

All the manufacturers cards will perform within 1% of each other assuming the same card and clock speeds. It's just cooling, warranty, customer service and software bundle that is different. I always buy cheap brands :)

Reply to randomizer

But what you think is best. My tyan thunder its sli so Im not sure if nvidia will run better.

Reply to Rafael Jordan

Only if you run SLI. A single card will run the same for either an Intel/AMD or nvidia chipset, there has never been any indication that the companies "tweak" their chipsets a little for their own cards.

Reply to randomizer

Hey man thank you for all the advice I really apreciate it. I think I´m gonna try the 8800GT. Thanks again! :D
By the way what do you do for a living?

Reply to Rafael Jordan

I like the EVGA brand. They offer a 3 month ugrade program that is nice if a really hot new card is released within 3 months of your purchase. They have lifetime warranty I believe. Also their warranty is not void by overclocking. So, I think they are a pretty good company.

I bought my 8800GT from them directly.

Reply to bjmarler

I really apreciate all the advice. I think I´m gonna try the Nvidia this time, best regards!

I've also got one of these cards (Connect3D X1950 Pro) and had the overheating issue. Every time the card got to about 73 degrees it would crash my PC.

For me, and I haven't read this anywhere else on the web, I found that when I removed the stock heatsink there were two small (about 5mm x 15mm) bits of material that looked a bit like small plasters. These covered the blobs of white heat conducting putty that went over the three voltage modulator chips.

Looks like these were intended to protect the surface of the putty during manufacture and the factory forgot to remove them. I could be wrong about that, but either way I found that once I removed them and reseated the cooler (using Arctic Silver 5 on the graphics chip itself) my card now performs perfectly.

Never gets above 63 degrees (well, not during Bioshock or Oblivion on max settings, anyway) and doesn't crash at all. Took a few days for it to work properly, which might be to do with the Arctic 5 or the putty (or both) needing to settle in properly, but straight away it would last maybe 10 minutes before crashing rather than the 1 or 2 minutes it took previously.

Maybe your card can be resurrected after all. I haven't read this solution anywhere else, so am going to post it around the internet a bit.

Well I couldnt make it work. I managed to get the card running at 30º but the card disorts the image everytime I try ti run a 3d game or app. I guess the card is just broken. I hate Connect3d. I replaced it with a Geforce 8800 gt and works like a charm.
