Can you be bit more specific? What is your goal? Is this a firewall (ISA)
server or ... ?

In general server starts listening (opens port) once the specific service is
started... E.g. SMTP (e-mail service) is listening on port 25 one you start
the SMTP service...

ISA is running on this machine. I was told by my internet
provider I need to have port 81 open to view my email from
the internet. I am trying where/how to open this port to
allow email viewing from the internet.

thanks,

Sorry,

before I give you instructions how to configure your ISA firewall, you have
to give me more information. Are you trying to access your e-mail from LAN
to Internet or from Internet to LAN?

If it is from Internet to LAN, where does this service run on? Do you have
Web based e-mail server like Exchange OWA? If it is the other way around
where would you like to pick up your mail from? Other SMTP servers or from
Web mail like e.g. hotmail?

I guess I am trying to access email from internet to lan???

Verizon.net is my provider. I can only change passwords,
configure new email accounts etc. by going to their web
site. I am told that since I cannot get into the web site
from the internet (from my office) that port 81 has to be
enabled for me to make this connection. I am able to get
to their logon page but i get a "Page cannot be displayed
error message).

I tried to connect to Verizon's web site from another
company's LAN and was able to do so without any
problems... I was able to setup emails and configure
accounts, change passwords etc...

That depends on how you closed it. :)

By default, on W2K, ports are open. So if nothing has been done to
close them, it isn't a problem. But you might have a firewall running
on it, or somewhere else, that's blocking ports. Why not tell us what
you want to accomplish and why you think you need to open a port?

I do not know how it was closed as I was not the one that
closed it ;{... below is what I am trying to do and why I

Hi,

What I understand from your post, you need access from your LAN to the
Internet.

My advice is to talk to someone that knows your firewall to help you
configure it (not over internet). I don't feel comfortable giving you
instructions over news group without seeing existing rules...

Sorry ... :-\

You asked how to open a port on W2K, but you say you have trouble
accessing from your LAN. There's a distinct probability that W2K has
no ports blocked. The ports are more likely blocked in a firewall.

Normally, ports initiated from the LAN side are allowed by firewall
settings, so if there is a firewall then it is tightened down to
prevent you from doing what you're doing.

Unfortunately, I can't give much help. You don't know what's been
done or where it may have been done, and neither do I. If you're the
network adminitrator you're going to need to do some digging to
understand your network, and if not, you need to contact your network
administrator for help.

Might have helped to tell us that originally.

ISA is blocking your access, so you need to configure ISA to allow
port 81 from your workstation/LAN to the internet/WAN. I don't know
what rules you have in place so it's tough to tell you what to change,
plus I don't know what company policies may require access being
blocked, if any. ISA is relatively easy to work with, if you look at
the docs you'll see how to handle most of this, and you could look at:

How to Allow Third-Party Internet Application Connections Through ISA
Server 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] -us;295667

How To Safely Connect Your Company to the Internet in Windows 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] -us;300876

Internet Security and Acceleration Server Support Center:
http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] SAS#faq558

There's also an ISA newsgroup.
