o.k. im really tempted to buy an x1950 pro 512mb agp card, but with r600 around the corner, it may mean 2 things

1) directx 10.1 agp cards, which would be worth the wait.
2) cheaper x1950 pro's currently around £130.00

at the moment i have a ati 9800 pro 128mb, which cost me over £300 cus im a sucker for buying the best most expensive video cards, well no more!

i just wanna play oblivion and star trek legacy at decent frame rates. so should i get a new card now or wait?

my system is
Amd64 3000+
asus K8vSE deluxe Mobo
2gb DDR 400 Corsair ram
hercules 9800 pro agp card
Soundblaster audigy Platinum
Win Xp pro (32bit)

i won't be upgrading the rest of my system for some time, and windows vista sucks (performance hog).

i would say wait, because midrange DX10 cards and r600 are only a few weeks away. and if they really do only cost $150 (8600's) then they would definatly be worth the buy.

I doubt they will ever release dx10 AGP cards.

He's sticking with AGP which means no DX10 cards (none are roadmapped...so far). I'd say for the games you're wanting to play just go for the x1950pro.

i really don't believe that no video card manufacture will produce no agp directx 10 cards. i really do think that it may take a couple of months but some one some where (ie saphire) will produce agp cards with directx 10 gpu's

this is true, i missed the part about agp.

As it was stated earlier there are no DX10 AGP video cards roadmapped. They may not ever do it because of the drain on system resources for windows Vista. Too much ram needed and a fair amount of processor too. If you just want too play the games you mentioned upgrade to the 1950 pro card and have fun until you can afford a new pc in a year or two. Then there will be enough DX10 games out in a year or two to justify the expense and you can build a system with enough headroom to take advantage of the eye candy without breaking the bank.

Now there's a challenge for someone. If someone can get Crysis running on a Socket 370 at above 20fps average i'll give them $400.

So do I...

Anyhow, anything PCI-e will be way cheaper than AGP, not to mention faster. That's why my 7800GS is my last GFX in the AGP lineage.

x1950pro/7600GT are newer AGP cards.

Well, you don't have to upgrade to Vista if you don't want to. That is the only place you can get DX10 anyway. Besides, I have seen some screenshots of Crysis on XP vs. Vista and both look very stunning. Save your money, and do what you can, when you can. Vista is struggling right now with some games...XP runs them much better, and has more support at this point in time. Happy gaming.
