When I try to log on to my online university site,
Internet Explorer reaches the site, blinks, and shuts
down. I THINK this is the firewall in operation. How can
I disable the bloody thing?

Which Firewall are you referring to? In any case, a firewall shouldn't
cause Internet Explorer to close. It may cause a Destination Unreachable or
File not found error etc. I'd suggest launching Internet explorer with NTSD
( a user mode debugger ), and it may tell you why IE was closed down. Are
there any Application Error / Warning events in the Event log when this
occurs?
