Has anyone tried to refresh WinXP Home with SP2 installed? I tried it
last night because I was having trouble getting my Start bar to even
show up. I inserted the WinXP disk (original purchased, not OEM). I
got a message that stated in escence, I could not refresh because of
the release I was on. It implied that, since I was trying an older CD
and trying to refresh Windows with some SP, it could not do that.
Anyone else had this problem? How did you get around it? Do we have
to purchase a new CD with SP2 already incorporated?

Ok, what is 'refresh' in the context you are using?

You need to add service pack 2 to your install. This is called
slipstreaming. Check this site for instructions:

XP SP2 is a later version number than the version number of your cd. If you
are trying to do a repair install or running the system file checker, you
need to create a slipstreamed copy of XP that includes SP2. See:
http://www.windows-help.net/Window [...] ootcd.html although I
prefer AutoStreamer http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html. It is
pretty easy to use.

An additional thought. If your only problem is your Start bar (task
bar?) not showing up you probably don't need to do a repair install.
Make sure that your PC is free of spyware and viruses. Make sure your
antivirus software is up to date and run a scan. A couple of commonly
used spyware cleaners are Adaware by Lavasoft and Spybot Search and
Destroy. Both are free.

And, if your system free of viruses and malware as suggested in this thread,
try using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to when this
began:
