I suspect this is a somewhat stupid question that has been asked before,
but I have searched around and can't quite seem to find an answer that
I totally understand, so here goes...

I have a Sony 57" HDTV monitor with a DVI input (among other inputs) and a
computer with an Asus Radeon 9200SE/TD video card with DVI output. I have
tried connecting the video card to the Sony TV by way of a DVI-D dual link cable
and it seems to work, sort of, but the resolution seems to be 720x480 with no apparent
way to change that resolution.

Is there any practical way I can have the computer connected to the Sony TV with
anything like a 1024x768 readable-resolution? Please help.

Not stupid at all. It has been asked before, by me a couple of weeks
ago, and I'm sure by others. I had a similar problem with an AIW
Radeon (the original; no numbers after it). I could feed up to
1024x768 to my Sony, but only if I told the Sony the input was from a
computer. That gave me a 4:3 display that I couldn't zoom. The
answer was a program called PowerStrip from www.entechtaiwan.com.
It's shareware, so you can see if it works for you. It lets you set
all sorts of resolutions including standard ones for HDTV, and you can
fine tweak the timings or create your own. Perhaps best of all, when
you tweak to the point where you have no display at all, there's a
keystroke that will restore a working resolution. Too many other
features to mention, and I've only scratched the surface of what it
can do. About $30, and well worth it IMO.
