Can I safely assume that when adding memory you should use the same timings as your existing memory?

Not necessarily. If you've got super overclocked RAM and you put in generic RAM, you could go and set yourself up to have a non-booting computer.

Best route would be to set your timings to auto in the BIOS and then let things go. Should be a bit safer. Then again, don't know much about stuff like this, so it could be best to wait for someone else to reply.

If you mix, I would suggest trying first to boot with SPD set. If that fails or is not stable, try setting the timings manually to some relaxed latencies. For example:

DDR try 3,4,4,8 and 2.7 to 2.8v Vdimm.

DDR2 try 5,5,5,15 with 2.0 to 2.1v Vdimm.

If you can avoid it, don't mix n match memory as there are many potential issues.
