I like games, but I am by no means a serious gamer. I put this system together with this in mind - that I want something fast, but don't need something insane/insanely expensive, loud, and hot.
What I would like help with is 'balancing' the system in two regards:
1.) with what I have selected, how will future upgrades be (as in, do I have a good platform for upgrading for a GeForce 10 or after CPU in a few years?)
2.) is everything balanced overall, in that there are no bottlenecks or wasted resources?
Thanks, any advice is appreciated.
Oh, I am not scared to overclock, nothing extreme, but if I can get another 10, 20, 30% out of the system (or just CPU), I would do it.
Look at the Antec P180 or Antec 900 for your case.
You can't plan on being able to upgrade to far into the future. We don't know what future requirements CPU's, Video cards etc will be. With that setup you will be able to upgrade to a quad core at some point, and should at least be OK into the next generation of video cards. No guarantees beyond then.
Card Reader 8O , please tell me why you use that? I'm curious, haven't even seen one for 20 years.
Card reader - as in internal USB card reader for CF cards from my Canon 30D.
I just don't want to deal with some jankey external one. Its nice to have a solid base in which to put the cards in (one hand).
I totally understand about the upgrade path, for example, the MB supports SLI, so in a year or two, I could toss another video card in (if I could find the same one!) and have a nice little boost in performance.
Oh, if anyone has suggestions as to other equipment, please let me hear it.
I have seen lots of people recommend the Antec Nine Hundred case. If you are interested, there is a good deal on it at CompUSA right now ... $90 after instant discounts and a $25 rebate (good thru 2/13) = $65
I have no doubt that case it good...but it looks...ummmm, yeah.
I am more of a Lian-Li case person. Simple, clean lines, very functional, all that.
If it helps, I would like whatever case will give me as quiet of a rig as possible - don't want to do liquid cooling, but just decently quiet (more of an issue of having quiet fans and a case with enough PROPER fan area so they don't have to run fast).
If you want to lower your costs, you could also look at the E4300, which would also allow you to go a bit cheaper on the memory I believe..all without sacrificing a whole lot of performance
