I cant decide between the e63/6400 and I cant decide between the asus p5b and the deluxe version. All I can find for memory is the kingston valueRAM 2x1Gb. Any suggestions on which cpu/mobo/ram? Also is the ds3 a better mobo?
Thanks Guys, best board on the net.
This a first time build for me and couldnt have done it without you guys!
I suggest the DS3, E4300, and whatever DDR2 800 that run good timings(4-4-4-12 or lower). I have had very good results with overclocking the gigabyte 965 boards.
Between the E6300/E6400 I would go with the E6400 if you can, or possibly the Xeon version 3050 for a few xtra bucks. I unfortunately could not, but may switch to the E6450 when they release in order to get to 3.2ghz and have 4mb of cache, an xtra 2mb of cache and 400mhz never hurt n e one. I would also say to go for the DS3 or AB9 Pro, as they are really good OC'ers at a good price. The memory I would suggest the same as above and go with DDR2 800mhz, with 4-4-4-12 or lower. My memory I got from newegg and it is $200 for my 2gb kit. They are a smaller company, but use Micron D9 chips in the models that I own, and I would suggest them if you dont want to OC your memory past ~850mhz with the stock timings of 4-4-4-12, because without loosening the timings that is about all I am able to get out of them.
If you're NOT overclocking, then just get the cheapest 533 or 667 Value RAM you can find, and a cheap mobo.
If you ARE overclocking, then either the 4300/6300 will work fine. But the P5B won't. You'll need at least the P5B-E to overclock. Or else move up to the Deluxe. And you'll need at least 667 RAM, preferably 800 if you want to hit high overclocks without pushing the volts up much, etc.
I am NOT overclocking I just want a good quality board and fast memory. I am also thinking about intel dg965whmkr
The biggest issue I have with the intel is the memory finickiness. It states that the 965 supports 1.8 and 555 or 666 only...is that the same for any 965 chipset board?
A 7600GT good for a light gamer, multimedia, mainstream
Don't get the intel board, the gigabyte DS3 is much better. If your not overclocking then go for the E6400 or E6600. I do recommend some mild overclocking though. The core2 is so easy to speed up it's crazy.
Actually, I would agree....the DS3 over the P5B. I think it's even cheaper than the P5B-E.
The Giga board is OC newbie-friendly. Not picky, very easy to use and OC. Solid board, definitely at the top of any 965 list. I'm obviously somewhat biased, but I've also owned ASUS, and I just can't find anything wrong with the DS3.......
I also agree with the DS3 over P5B, and stick to my conclusion about the memory, OC'ing or not that memory performs great for the price $200 with 3 day shipping, not to bad for 2gb of DDR2 800mhz 4-4-4-12 timings and micron D9 chips. If you dont OC then get the E6400 or E6600 if you can fit that into your budget if you do decide to OC get the E6400 or Xeon 3050 and read the OC guide that is stickied in the forums, it will walk you through very well and you can obtain a mild OC without messing with to many things.
will that memory work with the ds3? The 965 chipset says it needs 555 or 666 at 1.8v. this is a first time build so I dont have any memory sitting around to post and change the settings.
It works with my AB9 Pro, which is the same chipset as the DS3 I believe. I would also recommend the AB9 Pro, but I didnt want to stear you away from what you were looking at. They are both great boards.
NP, I hope it all works out good for you, like mine ended up. I got all of my stuff in on the day it was suppose to come in. Had the system built in 30 minutes, ran diagnostics on it and every part passed flawlessly and then was at 2.80ghz by the end of the day. It was the most flawless build I have done in the past 8 years.
Did Giga fix the DS3 with a recent BIOS where it now plays nice with the Micron D9's?? I know they had issues early on.
I got Elpida's or Promos in my OCZ....can't remember which offhand. Wanted to go with Team Group and sell this OCZ, but not if the DS3 still complains......not worth the extra $$ for the Team stuff for just a couple hundred mhz on the OC
Even if I went with the cheap G.Skill Micron's, still won't be worth it if the DS3 doesn't like 'em.
Hi...
my experience with a P5B and an E6400
Installed all... the Computer kept on restarting after passing successfully through the BIOS. (kept restarting at the point where it should start load the operating system)
A computershop told me that this could be related to the powersupply.
it was 450W.
So I bought a new powersupply (this time THE BIG ONE) 850W brand: aopen.
That did not change anyhing to my problem.
The shop went bust meanwhile (the day after I bought the ps.), so I cannot tell them that their idea was crap.
then...
I noticed that I could go into the BIOS...
there, it was stable for at most 3-4 minutes. then crash, restart.
something which struck me was that it seemed that the southbridge was really getting hot (compared with all the other components of the mobo.
I could not tuch the heatsink.)
Phoned up a guy called John xxx at the american Abit helpdesk.
He made me reset the bios, take off the battery, shuffle the memory, ... ...
and finally he asked me to get a copy of their newest bios and reflash the
bios-... .-.and I also did it.
the board never woke up anymore as there was a crash while updating the bios.
He told me that I should be able to get the mobo replaced but that I had to call the European helpdesks.
So...
Called the German Helpdesk, the Dutch helpdesk, ... explained what had happened and that I wanted the mobo either repaired or reflashed correctly (or replaced).
They explained that they could do that but only if I pay for that.
The mobo is guaranteed for 3 more years!!!!!!!!!!
Basically they did not want to know what was going on. I did not matter to them.
At the end of the day, I am not a technician, but I think that there was something wrong with the southbridge as it kept on heating up like mad.
I did not send the Mobo to be repaired (as they told me that I would have to pay for the repair.) I saved money on that.
If they would have repaired or RMA'd the mobo, then I would have said that I was unlucky.
but... they did not even care for the guarantee.
I got advised to go back to the shop where you bought it. BUT this shop was bankrupt.
I went to buy a DS3. (in another shop.)
slammed all the components inside, just dropped them in without looking...
switched it on,
and it works like a charm (even a little bit overclocked)
My advice:
GO FOR A DS3.
DO NOT BUY P5B'S. (I will not anymore, I stick with Gigabyte now)
Temps according to speedfan with stock cooler: 31 idle, 39 full blast with SP2004 *2 (2cores)
1.00 GB memory corsair x2 6400 (I will buy another 1.00GB soon)
memory: 4.4.4.9 +0.1V
CPU Intel e6400: 2400Mz instead of 2133mz on stock volt.
flashed to F10 recently and it is totally stable.
video NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 512Gb
Superb machine (for my taste)
is enough for my usage as it does what I want to do.
