When is the Pocket PC OS gonna be a standard upgrade regardless of the
device it's on? Does WM5 do this?
Right now I have a Dell Axim X5. Since the PPC OS is built upon CE the Dell
has traditionally made its own brand of OS upgrade. They are not offering
an upgrade from WM2003 to either WM2003 SE or to WM5.
Why can't the PPC OS be like the desktop OS and anyone with a desire and
some cash can upgrade?

Harry,
There has been a lot of dicussion on this topic in this newsgroup for the
last several days on this topic. The bottom line is that the OEMs can
choose or not choose to offer an upgrade on any or all of their products.
Each OEM can also configure that upgrade - just as they do with the ROM
flashes now - to offer what they want. Dell has choosen to offer an upgrade
on the x50 line but none of the others.
Hope this helps,

Clinton,
I realize this. The gist of my post was lamenting that this was the case
and desiring a more generic OS for the People!! that a USER can upgrade
regardless of whether the greedy mgfs "allow" it or not.
You missed my whole point.
Thanks
Harry

The only way you can have a "generic" PPC OS is if
you have nothng but "generic" PPC's.
The current crop is anything but.
Until the PPC OS is completely rewritten, probably
from scratch, to allow a more "desktop like" install
where hardware is detected and relevant drivers installed,
this is what we're stuck with.
And since this scheme would mean that we might hang
on to our hardware longer, therby decreasing sales of
PPC's, it'll probably never happen.
Super-greed rules. And our government does all it can
to protect it.

Sorry I missed your point...
But given that every PPC is "specialized" and not "generic", I don't see
this happening anytime soon.

It's not likely, as Microsoft is actually building in MORE open
architecture into this release, which gives OEM's more flexibility in
tailoring their individual products.
What your suggesting runs contrary to this philosophy.

Check out the mfg's who are giving out the upgrade and how well they are
supporting thier products. Make a note of it. Then the next time you buy
something instead of thinking the mfg's are "greedy", when infact they could
just be less competent, not capable of seeing the future well enough, have
limited support resources, designed something that is technically impossible
to upgrade, or selling as good a product, choose a company and product that
has a better track record for compatibility, support and upgrades.
> You missed my whole point.
And you missed the whole point of a free market system. The mfg's have the
freedom to manufacture and support thier products any way they want. That's
not directly your call, but in the long run, consumers have considerable
impact on how products are designed, mfg'd and supported. You do have some
responsibility as a purchaser of a particular product. Pay attention the
next time, it's all not just based on cheep prices, slick advertising and
slick features to capture your imagination only for as long as it takes to
make the sale and run the warranty out.
A good key would be to roam around a particular mfg's web site. See how well
they continue support with downloads, firmware upgrades, drivers, etc. There
is more information available today than ever before to help consumers make
intelligent descisions in thier purchase of any product, including pocket
pc's. If one website doesn't look like they offer as much ongoing driver,
firmware and software upgrade support, factor that in to your descision as
to what to buy. In a technology as rapidly changing as pocket pc's,
continued support to me is the prime factor.
And, I would never buy a Dell and I betcha others have learned about that
from you input and the threads that are going on in this conference about
the various mfg's "upgradibility".

Can you imagine how many more bugs and problem's we have. A bad idea if
you ask me, however I would like to see separate applications like
Powerpoint and Windows Media 10 made available to older operating
systems. hell, microsoft still supported windiws 95 until about 2 years
ago! WM2003 gets less than 2 years of support.
Apple have the right idea, make the hardware and the OS ;-)

Yeah - but nobody's sued them for being a monopoly!

I purchased an X50v about 2 months ago, knowing that
WM2005 was in the pipeline. I considered delaying my
purchase until I would be able to buy a device with it
installed. But then I would want to wait until my device
supported 801.11x - or the device would support hard
drives - or my device would ......
So I went ahead and made my purchase, knowing that Dell
wasn't promising me anything, and knowing my device did
what I wanted it to do at the time of purchase.
Will I be upgrading to WM2005 - not sure - usually I
would jump at the chance - but I'll watch the NGs to see
how the new kid on the block plays with others before I
let the beast loose in my device.

Microsoft has it big monopoly because its licience contracts with HP and
Dell etc. Apple only have a monopoly over what operating system Macs
use, just like Nokia have one over what operating system their phones use.
The problem with MS was they kept adding new products to Windows, and
used their fair monopoly to create an unfair monopoly, by making
Internet Explorer and Windows media player defualts on all Windows systems.
A bit like if Ford started a radio station and set all their cars to
come pretuned to it, and made it really hard to retune it to another
station.
