How do I know my heatsink is on properly?

When i put my heat sink on I never really felt like the pins went in properly. My computer is on its side and it hasn't fallen off yet, but i'm still not sure if its fully on. When i run TAT 100% my CPU temps almost immediatly jump to 55ish. I have a E6400 with stock heat sink.

what exactly is a e4300?

all i know of is

e6300,6400,6600 and the flag ship.

If the stock HSF isn't securely fastened through the board, then temps will typically spike to throttle or shutdown levels when under load. For info regarding proper temps, check out the following topic:

or; if you are able to take of the cooler and check to see if the thermal paste has 'attached' itself to the cooler's base, if it hasn't then it probably wasn't on correctly (put annother lot of paste on tho mind)

The chinstrap should feel quite tight and the heatsink should leave dimples in your forehead.
