I am looking for a 16 port gigabit router. I don't need wireless, as I have a 54g wireless access point. I was hoping I could get a 16 port gigabit router to eliminate the need for a router and then a switch. Any ideas or companies?

I don't think i've ever seen a router w/ 16 10/100/1000 switch ports. You'd really be better off money wise to have a 16 port gigabit switch w/ a router with 1+ gigabit ports going to a switch.
I think dlink has a 10/100/1000 "gaming" router that would work

There's little point in having GbE ports on a router when it's used as a router -- it's not as if your going to be limited by 100 Mb/s when communicating to the Internet. So in practice, when using a GbE switch in conjunction with the router, any router that does its own job well will do, whether or not it has GbE ports.

(One exception here would be the so-called faster than 100 Mb/s wireless routers / APs. If they're really that fast, they ought to all have GbE ports -- so that you don't lose the supposed speed gains above 100 Mb/s by going through normal 100 Mb/s Ethernet.

Another exception would of course be when the router is used as a switch as well.)

Most routers with GbE switches included also don't support jumbo frames and a number of other possible switch features, so you're generally better off going with separates -- for more flexibility in feature selection in router and switch, greater selection of devices, and better pricing.

Ok. Yea...basically I was looking for a router that could be used as a gigabit switch also. Just seems there is really no market for that. I guess my best bet is to go for a good 16 port gigabit switch. What good 16 port gigabit switches are there? I do a lot of file transfers between computers, and use Norton Ghost over my network. Looking for something not over $250 or so, but I do want it to have jumbo frame support and have pretty good performance. Any ideas? I found this Linksys switch?

Some people say the fan on the SR2016 is noisy -- this could be a problem in an office/home envioronment. Otherwise it looks OK.

The Dell 2716 is sometimes recommended -- it's fanless. It's probably the cheapest 16-port web-managed switch, which makes it something of a deal, having features not normally seen at its price point. But there are some reports of initial failures. I haven't tried one yet. And if you don't need the features...

Performance should be fine on most switches.

I'm really not sure what I'd pick.
