discussion between 6800 duo and 6700 quad

the guys in the above thread are discussing the merits of two processors.

a duo core 6800 and the quad core 6700.

now, I'm totally thrown here because there discussion revolves around the 6700 NOT being a native quad core???

huh, scooby snack anyone. that just flew over my head entirely.

apparently there's a native quad core design coming?

that being the case, am I better sitting on the fence and getting a E6600 now because it's tremendously price effective in relation to speed overclockability etc. or do I get a quad 6700 or 6600 now instead?

Remember the old P4Ds, which were 2 P4 dies stuck together into a "dual-core" design? IE not a "proper" dual core, not designed as a dual core, just stuck together to work as a dual core?

Same with the current Core 2 Quads. They're just 2 Core 2 Duos stuck together.

The difference in performance at present is minimal.

However I'd still get an E6600 over a Q6700/6600, the price/performance ratio is *much* better.

I'm just doing some reading now.

certainly seems that way. at £160 the e660 is very cost effective. the Q6600 is £450 in comparison.

however, with the intel price drop looming in april, reports put the Q6600 at an expected $530 which is about £300 at the outside, suddenly looks better.

I think what is making me indecisive is I do just as much video editing, 3d work, photoshop work as gaming and while the gaming I know won't show improvement with a quad core, my render times certainly will.

perhaps do something along the lines of E6600 now and in about a year or so, get a Q6600 off ebay or something much cheaper.

I just did that yesterday  . I was laboring over the decision since I had the cash to go quad, but taking an E6600 over 3ghz is going to work out sooooo much better for the time being. The savings in electricity for the house also had me leaning this way. When they revise the chip later this year I will take a look at it again. The though of a quad for supreme commander has me drooling...
