Hello,

I jusy built my new pc last night and noticed that the retail HSF that is supplies with the 64 X2 cpu won't lock to the mainboard brackett....is this a common issue?

The fan is on quite snug and I can't seeing it popping loose but is there another way to secure the latch such as a wire tie to hold it down?

I'm using a MSI K9VGM-V mainboard.

Thanks

BTW the CPU does seem to run cool....about 32 idle...and so far hasn't gone over 36c.

Most people will recommend attaching the HSF before you put the mobo into the case. You may also have the HSF backwards.

I mounted it per instructions on AMD sheet....with the latch towards the center of the board...doubt if there is clearence towards the edge of the MB because of the position of the PS.

Its turns fully clockwise to the base of the board but won't catch on the brackett.

Looking at the Mainboard in this link...I have the latch towards the Northbridge.

Not much there for the clip to lock onto.....theres on hook on the lever, just a flat flange thats supposed to butt up against the MB brackett.

OK. Also, sometimes you have to put some pressure(lift) on the opposite side to get the right clearance.

I actually have yet to install the AM2 HSF so I am not the best person to ask. I know the AM2 retention mechanism is diferent that 939.

Thanks for the reply Baron,

Yeah the retention latch is alittle quirky...but like I said it's down pretty snug and solid..its just that the latch won't lock in place on the MB brackett.

I may just have to secure differently.

Thanks again

Can you take a picture of your MB with the heat sink installed and post it? It sounds like your HSF is indeed backwards. If there's not room to rotate it 180ยบ, you can always unscrew the base plate and rotate the bracket. It should not take much force at all to lock down the latch.

Good luck,

I'll try and get a pic tonight and post it.

I'm pretty sure it's oriented right....but I will double check.

Thanks guys
