Hi I was wondering if a domain (AD) is required in setting up a SUS server.
We run a mixed environment and I would really like to take advantage of it
but we are not running a domain. Help?

Hi Scott,

AD is not required for running SUS server. You can set it up in workgroup
environment.

Nice thing about AD is that you can use Group Policy to deploy SUS settings
to all the clients. If you don't have AD and you setup SUS, you have to
manually configure your clients.
To make your job easier, you can configure e.g. one Windows XP using Regedit
and export the settings. Now you can use this .reg file to import the
settings to all other Windows XP computers.

Here is a whitepaper about SUS deployment that I highly recommend.

Software Update Services Deployment White Paper

There is also a newsgroup dedicated to SUS and WUS ...
microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

I hope this helps,

Mike
