I've been asked to "fault find" a problem with a Navman PIN. It's a
Pocket PC based Sat Nav device. Being a Palm PDA owner myself, I'm not
really familiar with what type of Pocket PC it's based on.
My problem is this:
It won't work on its internal battery.
The power switch underneath is in the "On" position.
It works fine using a car charger. It works fine on the AC adapter.
The device has been charged for over 24 hours. When I remove the
connector from the bottom, it won't switch back on.
When I reconnect the connector, the machine has to be set up from
scratch again.
I assumed that the battery or switch was faulty, so I exchanged it. Now
I've found that the replacement has the same fault. The prompts me to
wonder whether there's something I'm missing.

The Navman PiN is a Mitac Mio168. Sounds like the internal battery has
failed although having the same issue with two units is odd. If it wasn't
correctly switched On it wouldn't work at all so you can't be doing anything
wrong. Take it back to the retailer and see what they have to say.

Thanks.
I thought the chances of having two fail was unlikely as well. That's
why I posted my message. The only thing which did concern me when I
picked up the second one was when the clerk told me that the battery was
flat because the machine had been stored "out the back", switched "on"
for months. That sounds like a recipe for deeply discharging the
battery, which I believe Lithium Ion batteries don't like.

Thanks for your suggestion. I rang the retailer and told them of my
problem. They were very cooperative. I asked them to charge the second
replacement before I got there, just so I could see it working, which
they did.
This unit now works fine.
The worst part of it now is that I've had to give it back to its owner,
and even though I only had it a few hours, I'd grown to like it. I'm
now considering buying something like that myself. The main reason I'm
still considering it is that some posts on this newsgroup have indicated
that there is little backward compatability with Pocket Windows (sorry,
I'm not really sure on the products proper name). That's probably one
area where Palm devices do reasonably well. Most (but not all, of
course) software designed to run on PalmOS 4 and older will actually run
on PalmOS 5. I think that's pretty reasonable considering they actually
changed the type of processor during that time.
