Hi there,

Working in the Registry takes a lot of experience, and knowledge of what each entry means and what it does.
You can make modifications, but when you do there is no 'confirmation', and making certain even simple looking changes can irreversibly make your OS not boot.

So it is not something to be done lightly.

One of the best is 'Mastering Windows XP Registry' by Peter D. Hipson, written several years ago but very thorough
