I have decided to selfbuild a system for using photographic and Video production software. So I need something powerful but not a monster ;)
My budget, is around £1000 all in or there abouts..I have build systems a number of years ago but am out of touch with the technology, hence this thread.. I am looking for advice.
I will need lots of ram I suppose 4GB and a large Hard drive, I have quite a few drives alread but they are ide.. Apart from the Hard Drives I already own i want all parts new, a complete build. It would be nice to be able to use at least one of my current ide drives as a second HD on the system.. But the main drive can be a NEW sata drive.

Plenty of Ram
Good motherboard..
Good video card.
Decent sound but not mind blowing.
Flat panal Monitor at least 19 or larger if possible.
Wireless mouse and keyboard
Vista.. no idea what version but bog standard if i can get away with it.

I know i am missing things, and I appreciate this is a bit vague, and that is an understatement
but if I knew what parts i needed I wouldnt need to bother you guys..
So any reponse, ideas, questions or thought will be very much APPRECIATED !
Even something to get me started like ideas on Motherboards and processors combo you might think I might like?

Thanks again for your time !
A-H

Total - $1253.92, leaving $747 for case, psu, hdds, dvd-rw etc (or to pair another equal monitor :D)

I advise you to leave Vista alone. There are a few issues with video editing software even with their patches. Sony Vegas is not supported at all. And you will need a stable machine, so you wouldn't like very much if a 10 hour render crash.

OK its time for the dumb questions this is number one.. ;)

On the motherboard link I cant find where it states ide support, so i am missing something here ?
And with time I am wondering if some of the items are USA only ? :)
*I prepare to be beaten with stick !

All the new motherboards have 1 IDE connector which allows you to connect 2 IDE devices via this cable:
16837_ide-cable.gif

This motherboard has 2 IDE connectors, so you can plug up to 4 IDE devices (you said you have several old HDD), which will let you plug more devices without the need to buy a pci ide controller card.

Do you follow?

(these items I pointed are sold worldwide)

I just could not see any mention in the motherboards support for ide, or mention of ide connectors on the motherboard specifications..
Well have a look again !

If u are going to use all the old hdd and two large capacity sata ones, you'll have enough space to work (500Gb sata hdd are now at $170ish)

EDIT. look again, there are other two black sata ports near the red ones, which makes it 4 sata
PATA 2 x ATA100 up to 4 Devices
SATA 3Gb/s 4 x Internal SATA 3.0 Gb/s, 1 x External SATA 3.0 Gb/s

Choose a good 500W known branded one (thermaltake, ocz etc) with at least 24Amps on the 12V rail ar with two 12V rails (least 32Amps) Don´t spend more than $100.

The case is very personal because of aesthetics. 99% come with 2 usb at front and 1 firewire $70-$130 is the optimal range
