I bought this audiovox D1020 mobile DVD in a bag (10" 16:9 screen) to
use in home and car. We played the "lord of the rings - return of
king" rental DVD. It showed picture with black bars all around.
Thinking it has something to do with DVD content itself, I switched to
broadcast TV. The PBS channel which transmits content in widescreen
(appears letterboxed in normal TV) also appeared with black bars all
around. Now I think it may be fault of the player. There is a "wide"
button on the player but pressing it just stretches the tiny picture
horizontally. Why can't 16:9 content fillup an entire 16:9 screen
without black bars on all 4 sides? Other channels appear normally with
black bars on left and right side. Should I return this unit? I didn't
buy a 10" screen to watch widescreen content on only 7" of it.

Not all Widescreen movies will fill up a 16x9 screen on the top and bottom.
There are many different aspect ratios. The 16x9 was what "they" felt was
the best median decision for displaying all widescreen aspect ratios.

The audiovox mobile players have a problem with their initial setup.
Although the screen is a 16:9, the initial setup is defaulted to 4:3.
You need to go into the setup screen and reset the display setting to
16:9.

Under screen setup (this only applies to DVD output as per their
instructions) I see three choices - PS, LB and wide. I tried choosing
one after the other. None of this had any effect. I vaguely remember
seeing full widescreen on a DVD as soon as I set it up (before
watching Lord of Rings DVD). Something has happened and I can't seem
to go back to full widescreen. Now it displays 16:9 content in a small
screen with black bars all around.

This is how I change the display for my Audiovox (Model #D1730)
- Press Setup on the remote
- Under General Setup press the right arrow (> ) to bring up the General Page
- Press the right arrow (> ) again to choose the TV Display
The three options to choose from are:
NORMAL/PS
NORMAL/LB
WIDE
- Using the down arrow (v) highlight WIDE and hit the Play Button to select.

Is it possible that your LOTR DVD is NOT an anamorphic widescreen
disc, but a letter boxed 4:3 version? i.e. the top and bottom bars
are part of the 4:3 image on the disc. Your player then padded two
black pillars on the sides. The over all result is bars on all sides,
two from your player and two from the disc.
It is very unlikely any modern DVD is produced this way. In such
situation, you need to use the ZOOM display mode if it is available.

I finally managed to have the player display a full screen image (by
repeatedly changing settings) - don't still know how I did it. Anyway
the cable TV images coming in 16:9 aspect ratio still are displayed
with black bars all around. I would imagine they are including the top
and bottom black bars in the image for 4:3 TVs although I can't
imagine why broadcasters would want to do that.

Have you check your cable set-top box? Most HD ready STB has a
setting to let you specify what kind of TV you have. If the box
thinks you have a 4:3 screen, it will send you letterboxed 4:3 picture
for HD programs.

I was wrong. I found out that most region 3 DVDs produced for China
are still done in letterboxed 4:3 format. Perhaps certain markets
does not have anamorphic widescreen yet.
