You mean how many processors can an OS support? With XP and most NT based OS, the limit is 2 physical socketed CPUs. The amount of cores you can have are endless. For Windows Server Edition, I believe you can support and unlimited amount of sockets. For Linux, there is no limit. If you are talking about Microsoft Vista in specific, then take a look at this:
