Hi, I am very new to Macs. I just bought my first Mac Mini 2012 which is being shipped to me now. I have a question about connecting to this device remotely. I know it is possible but I was wondering if you have to be on the same network or if it can be done from an outside network. For example, if I am at a coffee shop in another state, can I connect to my Mac Mini that is online at home? If so, can someone send me a link to a guide that would let me do this and possibly let me know what the best software for this is. Thanks!

Hi,

There are a few effective ways of connecting to your computer internlly and externally:

For internal (on the same network) I would reccommend VNC http://www.realvnc.com/.

For external (away from home) connection you could:

1. Port forward your VNC (If you feel good enough to)

2. or alternatively use a service such as LogMeIn https://secure.logmein.com/UK/.

Both of these services are free (limited) for personal use and compatible with mac, linux and pc.

Hope this helps.
