I'm new on this forum, and I have the following question: E6600 or Xeon 3.2? I want to build a home computer, not a server and I'd like to know how will the Xeon react in games, video encoding etc.? Will it be better than the E6600? Or worse? Please help. And please don't advise me to buy a E6400 and overclock it. I want the bigger cache.

buy a e6300 wait for the q6600 price to drop - buy q chip - sell e chip on ebay!

thats my suggestion - i built an e6300 @2.8ghz last fall (i run low volts) - it runs pretty good! i would wait for the q- drop!

stay away from severs - servers are for multi-access 1) you mis out in nice counsmer features like good sound on gaming boards 2) spend more for no real world differences - few apps can use 4 cores

So, you're basically telling me that they're almost identical. So, they should have the same performance in games and video encoding, and I should expect that the Xeon will perform better, because it has the higher frequency?

No, the Xeon@3.2Ghz your thinking about is a Netburst(Pentium) Core, this Processor isn't even 50% of the power a Xeon 3070 Has to offer. The Xeon he's referring to is the one I've linked to in the post Above. the Xeon 3070 @ 2.66Ghz based on the Core 2 Duo "Conroe" Processor.

I'm pretty sure that the Xeon 5100 series is based off of Core, and that the 5300 series [of Xeons], Clovertown, is the server version of Kentsfield.

The 5000 series (not including 5100 or 5300) is based off of NetBurst and is the old Dempsey core.

Woops just realized that the E6600 is @2.4Ghz I unwittingly thogyht that the E6600 was @ Par with a 2.66Ghz Xeon 3070, but it's actually the E6700 that's at Par with the Xeon i was linking to.

Yes, Mauro should buy a Xeon 3060 LGA775 instead of the E6600 because it's also a Server, and it's the same thing but better and Cooler than the Desktop partner, Also @ InteliotInside, We're not even speaking of LGA771 Xeon Processors either the Woodcrest or the Clovertown, If you Compare Apples to Apples then you have to speak of LGA775, instead of LGA771, because going with a Woodcrest or Clovertown would extrapolate the cost of his system due to Buffered RAM and other expensive Server only disadvantages interims of Financial costs.
