HEY, im planning on buying a new CPU from my old 2.4 ghz celeron, and pretty much a whole new system
yeah

with a reasonable budget (5-600)
i do some gaming, alot of multimedia multitasking
-probably will learn overclocking??

QUESTION:
should i buy a core 2 duo (e6300)?
an amd x2 3800 or 4000 for less money?
a higher clocked pentium d 9xx?
(beginner overclocker)

- i understand that the clock speed is different now, but which do u reccomend for gaming and computing in general

and what do u reccomend for a mobo ie chipset

-sorry for so many questions...any answers are a big help

-thanks[/b]

You would need an X2 5000+ to match the E6300 in performance.
But for the price I would hit up the x2 3600+ or x2 3800+. I'd get the x2 3600+ 65nm with a nice fan especially if you're into overclocking. It can be overclocked to x2 3800+ levels without vcore changes. A few people who are good at overclocking can hit 3.0 Ghz on it. Then spend more money to have a well rounded computer. The E6300 is nice, but you'll spend so much money on that and an overclocking board, there will be no money left for anything else.
I recommend this combo.

Cpu and motherboard for 160, and then just get a fan with the 20 dollars you save on the combo (that'll be a good fan - Arctic Pro Freezer 64).

Ah, no I don't think so. At stock speed the E6300 gives the same performance as the 4200+/4400+ depending on what benchmark you look at.

To the OP:

The C2D CPU will give you pretty good performance. I have an overclocked E6600 myself, but if you have a budget then AMD is the better option. Not only is the X2 3600+ cheaper, but AMD motherboards are general less expensive than a C2D mobo. That goes a long way freeing up some cash for other things like a better GPU for gaming.
